I worked in a big manuf. plant ONCE.. I was hire to streamline injection pump production.
They were 3000 units behind schedule [back orders]
1st day I "watched", 2nd day I went into action.. The workers were bumping into each other, trying to get parts cleaned-up..
The machines they NEEDED to use were in the wrong order, so you had 1 guy side-stepping the other, trying to get to a machine..
The BOSS comes around & I tell him about this.. He says, "I'll call Maintenance.."
No need, I'll just move this here & this over there.. wont take 5 minutes.. NOPE.. GOTTA call maintenance.. the BOSS walks off.
I waited for 30 minutes & nobody showed up.. & I moved the machines & we went to work..
2 days later !!! "Maintenance" shows up & asks where I want the machines moved to.. lol
I got my asss reamed for that.. BUT after THAT, I was "the go-to guy" for getting things done & taking the heat..

Not buying it... 80% of the work we do is Union; multiple trades, 5 to 8 easily... NEVER seen what you describe. Most of these guys know each other, shoot... half of the first day is like a bloody family reunion. Give me a Union guy any day, shows up for work at 6:30, with tools in hand, knows his trade, and is a professional at it.

Dunno as I wasn稚 there. This was up in like Chicago or somewhere. Been many years since I heard the story. In my line of work we have lazy people that work harder to get out of work than it would take to do the task. In that regard it痴 not hard to believe to me

I worked for the government for 20 years in a forensic department and the new gods decided it was time for a clean up so they decided that it would be a good idea to destroy and dump any dead files that were over 15 years old to free up space.
There were several of us present representing out own divisions and most of us were used to these time wasting exercises which generally were just for self gratification for a new directorate.
Being the cynic I suggested that it would probably be a good idea to copy all the files before destroying them (this was before the days of electronic storage), they thought this was a great idea and it was implemented.
That was a source of some mirth and merriment for some years to come.

Still laughing on this one.. I have been in the IT business for many years and I was working on a system (time & materials, no support contract) and needed the electrical breaker shut off while I checked some connections and whatnot. Customer wanted to call in their electrician to turn off breaker (I carried lock out set for electrical panel and knew how to make sure someone did not turn it back on). I told customer, no problem, clock is running, I can wait as long as you want, you're paying me by the hour. We waited an hour before customer (IT manager) gave me the go ahead to shut off breaker). Took me 5 minutes to shut off and lock out, 15 minutes to do what I needed, another 5 minutes to remove lock out and turn breaker back on.. but the customer paid for and extra hour for no reason.

I like your sarcastic thought process FrankRetired! Believe me, I fired the same stuff back at them. I basically told them they can stuff their gloves where the sun doesn't shine. Long hair, long sleeves, floppy shirts, and gloves around shop machinery is just asking for trouble. The only time I wear gloves in the shop is during a messy tear down and a clean reassembly job and I use nitrile examination gloves for dexterity and preventing product contact.

I just discovered those Nitrile gloves last spring. Love them and one sure can't beat the price! Usually in the $3.xx range at Walmart for 3 pair pack.

Sounds like you work for the government.

I'm enjoying this, it reminds me of a company I worked for. They had a lot of software engineers who had a lot of files on the main computer that were not accessed very often. Incremental backups were done every day and full backups were done every month. The "unused" files were taking up space and management was running out of space and didn't want to buy another hard drive. So, in their wisdom, they decided that they'd get rid of all the "unused" files that night. What an uproar the next morning! Management ended up restoring all the files they'd deleted. Management told the engineers they did that because the files weren't being used. (Also, wrong thing to say.) So, being software engineers, each one wrote a program that as soon as they logged on for the day, their login program would go out and "touch" every file they had. The daily backups went from a few files to the entire system every night. They used far more storage in backups than they would have if they'd just bought a hard drive. Management ended up going to the engineers with hat-in-hand and asked nicely if they would stop their login program and in exchange they promised they'd consult with them before any files were deleted in the future. So the software engineers did.

After awhile, the disks started filling up again and new disks were needed. So management actually told the engineers that they're running out of space and please remove unneeded files. The engineers did and no new disk was needed. It's amazing what communication and cooperation can accomplish.

I'm a physician and work at several centers owned by our group and an Orthopedic Hospital owned separately.

Every year we must undergo 'safety training' which consists of 8hours of video viewing, watching actors portray ridiculous situations.

I have to watch the same **** videos TWICE, once for my group's centers and once for the Hospital. JCAHO refuses to accept the cross check. And to make matters worse, the system has multiple quizzes throughout the video in order to proceed, so I can't just put it on in the background and ignore it. I sit at the exact same computer and answer the exact same questions online. But the access to the quiz is from different email links, thereby checking the ******* box of some ignoramous out there who can justify his existence.
