I just bought a tiller for a new veggie garden that the wife wants. As i was looking at the ground where it is going to be I notice a lot of rocks on top of the soil. The rocks vary from ping pong ball size to about grapefruit size. If these rocks are on top of the soil I'm sure there are more under the top that I can't see.

I will be using a 2360 with 50" tiller. Both are new and I really don't want to break anything the firts time I try this.

Because of the number of rocks is there a rake of sonme kind that will make it easier to get rid of these?

Or do i have to do it the old fashioned way, by hand and wagon?

The garden is going to be about 40'wide by about 100' long.

Is there anything else I'm missing?

I posted the message above in another area of discussion. It was recommended that I usea sub-soiler to bring the rocks to the surface to help the tiller a bit.

Does anyone know where i can get a set of plans to build a sub-soiler. I already have a welding machine and a BIL owns a steel fab shop, and a second BIL is a qualified welder. So for price of steel I could make one.

This seems a better solution than to pay for one at nearest dealer where prices are way over inflated.

A simple middle buster is $139. at Tractor Supply, and those types of places. Sometimes, actually, all the time, you can get a coupon for 10% off that or a flat $5 off that price. Not saying you couldn't build one that cheap or cheaper, but they aren't expensive. For your garden, a middle buster is a bit safer, imho, than a subsoiler. It doesn't have to go as deep, and the large spade deflects the rocks. Some of these are combo units. Middlebuster/subsoiler.

I built a subsoiler last year out of some scrap...

There's good advice on that thread, but know that even after I reinforced the one I built, it still wasn't strong enough. I'm planning to start over and build one with a few more structural elements to make it stronger.

My point is this... If you make one, over build!
