This is the only section that this instrument might be relevant. It is a device for locating metal. I have seen surveyors use something like this. Does anybody have any experience in using this device? I have used the regular metal/coin detectors, and have ued the transmitter device for finding buried wires. I was interested in locating survey boundry rods, sprinkler valves, wires, and septic handles, etc. If you walk up to a car, it will go off at about 8 ft. Years ago, I had heard these things could locate a car buried 10 ft deep.

Anyway, I got a super deal on this, and hope it works for what I want to do.

We use a similar version at work. They typically use them to locate valve boxes and pipe in the ground the field guys use the audible settings and scan the area with the sensitivity set high to cover a large area and when they get a hit (change in sound) they start tuning back and zero in on the box/lid/pipe. Some of the head aches are that it will pick up any ferrous object. The can be very useful.

we had one something like that one where i worked and used it for survey markers. i remember one that we dug 3 to 4 feet deep and sure enough there was the 1/2" pipe. it works great for finding pipe but you won't find any coins, or bottle tops. ours wasn't a digital type just buzzed.
should be happy with it. . . what ya using it for?

We have several where I work, I am a land surveyor, and ours are made by Chicago Steel Tape(CST). To be honest, ours cost quite a bit less than that, more like $600. I'm pretty sure the Subsurface is a better locator, and yes they work really well for the intended purpose.

JJ,

Since you already bought it, I hope you got a super deal. There is a few similar on this link to Florida Level and Transit (FLT) for about 1/2 that +/- There used to be an FLT office on Beaver St. next to Lane ave but they have since closed.

Those locators work well for the intended purpose. Remember to turn the gain or sensitvity down to pin-point what you want. Typically they have two sensors, one in the end and one 1/2 way up. Watch for crap in your pocket, i.e. money clip, cell phone, it will drive you nuts till you figure out why its buzzing.

I purchased a detector at a yard sale and tested it by pinpointing my concrete septic tank that I knew the location of.

It very accurately located the steel armature and gave me the exact profile of my tank which is buried 7 ft underground. Also pinpointed my pumping station accurately.
