Sunday noise

   / Sunday noise #21
For the last 34 years, I've lived out here in the country. Nearest neighbor is 2.5 miles & nearest town with church is 12 miles. I have to listen real hard to hear cars on the county road where my driveway hooks into. I never hear my neighbor, so I know he never hears me. I run any and all of my equipment any time of the day or night and know I'm not bothering anybody.

When we lived in Anchorage - it was in a subdivision of about 450 homes with lot sizes around 1/4 acre. We had municipal(county) noise ordinances - nothing real loud before 8 am on a week day - nothing real loud before 10 am on the weekend. It seemed to work out fairly well - we seldom received many complaints - I was Director of Environmental Health in Anchorage.

I've lived on a 1/4 acre lot in suburbia for 41 years and the last 5 years splitting time between real rural Mississippi. I've a problem in that I tend to wake before sunrise and want to "get 'er done".
For 40 years I followed the principle of no loud noise before 7:30 am on weekdays/9 am on weekends BUT always waited until I heard someone else fire up.

Many a day I've sat on the porch piddling with small stuff waiting for the first crank of someone elses lawnmower. Gradually over the last 10 years it seems many of my neighbors have hired lawn services and in the summer they now roll in about 7 am some days. But I still wait for someone else to make the first noise. On Sundays that's now usually about 9 to 10 am.

I've often wondered how many others wait for the silence to be broken.

In Mississippi I just try not to wake the wife before 10 am.

With today's work reality, many people don't have a choice but to do chores when they have time though I do think it is rude to run noisy equipment that would disturb neighbors early in he morning or late at night. I hear neighbors running equipment at reasonable hours but they are also so far away it is not a problem even if it was late or really early. I heard some mowers and blowers today. :D

Ironically given the church tie in with this discussion...

When we FINALLY were able to move into our country house, the nearest neighbor was a good 1200 fee away. I went out one Sunday night to get firewood and I heard MUSIC! WTH!:confused3: The music was not from the neighbors but in the opposite direction. WTH! The nearest road and houses in that direction are a mile or so away so I could not figure out where the music was originating. :confused3: I finally realized the noise was from a CHURCH that is maybe a 1/4 mile away and on one of our corners! They were having a Sunday night program of some kind and they sure had some loud music!:laughing::laughing::laughing:

We moved to the country for peace and quite and we get danged noise FROM A CHURCH!!!!:laughing::laughing:

great story Dan. Assuming that music was gospel oriented, I bet it was nice to listen to, with a piano and vocals?
Always wondered if birds sung along to our music. Well, maybe hummed...;)

I don't know of any laws regulating noise based on the day of week; i.e., Sundays. But I guess most cities, at least in my area, have some laws regarding time of day. The ones I know of prohibit certain noises between 9 p.m. (or 10 p.m. in some cases) and 7 a.m. I, too, am an early riser, so many times, I've waited for 7 a.m. to arrive to mow the yard.

But now, I have a battery powered EGO lawnmower WITH HEADLIGHTS! So I sometimes start earlier.:D

Interesting topic!!! I'm a get-up-early guy and like to start early but sweetie sleeps in so I try to keep it quiet until 9 a.m. or so. Also, on Sundays I try to wait for someone else to start running equipment before I do. I think it's kind of a throwback to being at my grandparents' place - on the "farm" where my mom was born. We could shoot all day on Saturday's but weren't allowed to shoot on Sundays. Grandpa's rule although I can't ever remember him actually going to church. He used to say that he liked to watch "the preacher on TV so I can turn him off when I'm tired of him". LOL!

Several posts ago someone mentioned not being able to buy alcohol or a car in Indiana on Sundays. Amazing how the "blue laws" are still in effect. Both of my parents are from W. Va. which still had blue laws in effect when I was a kid. Pretty much everything was closed on Sundays - except restaurants, grocery stores and gas stations. This posed a bit of a challenge for my Seventh-Day Adventist grandparents who observed Saturday as the Sabbath. Ohio still has some oddball laws like this as well. Some grocery stores can only sell beer and wine after 1:00 pm on Sundays.

When the Highway Patrol in the State of Minnesota begins issuing noise violation citations to the folks who ride Harley Davidson motorcycles without a hint of a muffler past my house at all hours of the night and day then I will be more sensitive to my noise output. But, since that is most unlikely, if I get the urge to mow a little a grass, trim a tree to two, then my noise output will most likely continue.

It was at night in January and the birds were long past any singing! :D I could hear some singing but it was the loud electric guitar and drums were what I mostly heard.:laughing::laughing::laughing:

Around South Mills, NC where I grew up, you could here the black churches that were so called "Rock Churches", playing rock and roll soul on Sunday nights. Occasionally our big window fan would pick it up like a radio and you could hear it all over the house, distortion and all.

Very subjective topic.

The quieter it is, the more any sound seems to travel (obviously).

I like quiet as the sun sets, enjoying tranquility.

Last night two things disturbed the silence. Dogs barking a quarter mile away and some stupid (lawn mower in a can) generator screaming away, miles away, belonging to some off-gridders! The neighborhood has to pay for them to be off grid, I guess.

I'm not religious, by any stretch of the imagination, but find myself praying that, that 3600 rpm POS will self-distruct sooner rather then later.
