Sunday noise

   / Sunday noise #31
I go to church on Sunday mornings and try to take the rest of the day off from chores now that I am old and retired. But if something is all that pressing which is usually due to the weather forecast, I get to it in the afternoon. What my neighbors do generally doesn't bother me. The rural suburban setting with fewer neighbors makes coexistence easier than a city dwelling.

When I lived in the city, it seemed like there was a lawnmower etc. humming somewhere from Friday evening till Sunday evening. Rural living is so much better in that regard.

Oh, and how about incessant dog barking? Does that count as "Sunday Noise" be it rural or city? Oh yeah, change that "generally doesn't bother me". :(

wonderful timing, I am now being serenaded at 5pm on Sunday by what must be the local response to a widespread alien invasion. Boom boom boom boom. ok, better at 5pm than 5am, but with hunting season coming in, folks have to practice sometime. Geez, how do they get them to fire so fast, bam bam bam bam bam.....

The back neighbor has at least a couple of fully automatic weapons that he likes to play with. Evidently has a lot more money for ammo than I do.

When I was younger my mother always took us to Sunday school and church early in the morning. Rural community, never much noise. My father worked several jobs to put food on the table, that included working Sundays. He'd be out clearing fields with a 75hp diesel International and 6' Bush Hog, areas nobody else would touch. He made good money for it. He did what he had to do, nobody ever faulted him for it.

Now that I'm grown (32) and have a home of my own on 4.5 acres, I was concerned when we built our house because I had planned on buying equipment to clear the overgrowth and keep our place in shape. One neighbor, albeit nosy, is very kind, doesn't care about noise. The other is a grumpy older fella who I get along with GREAT. He's in his mid/late 70's, this is how our very first conversation went:

Me: Hi, my name is Chris, me and my fiance (at the time) bought the land next to yours.
He just stared at me.
Me: I wanted to let you know that if any of the construction equipment or machinery is making too much noise early or late, please don't hesitate to call me.
Him: pointing back at his house, he says "see that there? That's MY property. You don't give a ____ what I do on my property!" he then points at my property. "see that there? that's YOUR property! I don't give a ____ what you do on your property!

I put my hand out and said: "Al, we're going to get along great!"

Now he waves at me, he never used to. He minds his own, and I do the same. He fires up his old tractor early in the morning, I don't care, can't even hear it inside. I don't think he can hear mine either. My wife and I love it here!

When I was a kid, stores started staying open on Sundays. That's about the time things got to changing. People work 7 days a week in a lot of places and they only have a few hours to get things done at home or on the farm now. Sign of the times.

There's only a very few stores that aren't open on Sundays anymore. Many factories are 24/7 around here, too.

Oh, but I do still hear our church's bells from our house a mile away.

Anyone remember the "blue laws"? As in, no stores open on Sundays? Anyway, around me, people are generally respectful until after lunch on Sundays. After that, you might hear some 4 wheelers crawling around in the bush, someone target shooting, maybe a lawn mower if the grass has been hard to keep up with. Only rarely will someone be farming. Perhaps if the weather is going to go bad and the hay has to get baled.

Mostly, the neighboring cows don't seem to get it, lol! Especially if the young ones have been taken from momma.

IMHO, you need to go with the flow, be respectful and use some common sense. Being the beginning of November tomorrow, I can expect that one day soon, the group that farms some 30,000 acres will be going until about 11pm when they finally get around to the soybeans or corn around me that they work. More than likely, I am going to have to pull off to the side somewhere when one of their combines is moved around on the roads.

In Indiana, you still can't by alcohol on Sundays in any store and all bars are closed.... unless the bar sells food for enough people to qualify as a sort-of restaurant. Then it can remain open and you can go and by a cheeseburger and 20 beers and get your load on.

Around here, my best guess is that its quiet on Sunday morning because the noisy ones are still sleeping Saturday night off!

Yeah, our liquor stores are closed on Sundays, holidays and election days. You can still buy 3.2 beer in the grocery stores though.

I mainly remember no beer before 1 on Sunday! :D

When the Highway Patrol in the State of Minnesota begins issuing noise violation citations to the folks who ride Harley Davidson motorcycles without a hint of a muffler past my house at all hours of the night and day then I will be more sensitive to my noise output. But, since that is most unlikely, if I get the urge to mow a little a grass, trim a tree to two, then my noise output will most likely continue.
Love it .
