Synthetic Oil in Tractors and Trucks

/ Synthetic Oil in Tractors and Trucks #11
I switched to synthetic on my tractor at 13 hours. If I had a new car, I'd run it the recommended # of miles on the breakin oil and change right away to synthetic.

All my engines (lawnmowers, generator, all 4 cycle) are on synthetic and have put it into 2 of the power steering reservoirs.

I only about 6000 on mine so it is breaking in also. On a trip to georgia I was getting about 18 to 18.5 mpg running 75 and 80 on the interstate. I noticed that with the 6 speed at 75 mph I am running about 500 rpm slower. pulling a trailer or around town I am seeing about 14 to 16 Still that is about 2 to 3 mpg better than I saw with my 2005 5 speed allison.

I have a 2006 duramax short bed, 4 door cab ,4 wheel drive, L3 , silverado

OK what is funny ?

Well..I read your post 2 times..and I THOUGHT you were saying that BECAUSE you had changed to syn oil...you were running 500 RPM LESS down the highway at the same speed!!! The "6th gear part" makes the difference..

Wouldnt it seem kinda funny to YOU ( if you didnt have that 6th gear) to read it???

Most of the new vehicles I've gotten lately have stated that you should leave the original oil in the engine for the recommended milage... In fact, the Honda Hybrid we bought stated that if you have to change the oil for any reason, re-install their "break-in" oil for the remainder of the required milage. Since this car uses 0-20W, maybe it's special? Still, Subaru and Chevy also ask for this procedure, come to think of it...
As for DIY oil changes, more than one dealership has told me that it's fine to do that, just keep a record of milage and receipts for oil, filters or whatever.

Daughter's Acura carried the same admonition--to not change the original oil for 10K miles.

Yep it would seem funny. I wished that it made that much difference. I am just thinking that I will get some better lubrication characteristics out of the synthetic. I am hopeing that at my age this will be the last truck I have to buy.

Varmint I have asked about break in oil but none of the dealers I have talked to seem to know anything about that. When I was younger you used break in oil then changed it at about 600 miles but I have been told they dont do that anymore.
