Synthetic oil myth or fact?

/ Synthetic oil myth or fact? #41
So long as we can stay away (TBN being better than most sites) from Fanboy Flamewars about brands, this can be a great medium for exchanging information.

I've learned a lot, and had specific help given to me, from people all over the planet on here.

If VAG recommends a fluid change interval at a certain time you better believe THEY did the testing to realize this. I see older Passats all the time with over 200k miles with original oil never any issues. The DSGs are another animal though as they use a computer controlled wet disc clutch NOT a torque converter. The oil dirtys up pretty quickly specifically if one holds the car on a hill with their foot OFF the brake (big no-no). Hold the brake and foot off the gas so the TCM uncouples the clutch completely so the fluid gets less contaminated; thus the reason for 40k service. OEM oil and filter only and not cheap.
