That is my kind of boat. Classic lines, yar.

Re: Takin\' the wife out to dinner...

I just looked at the brochure picture that you posted. I have a friend that purchased a Catalina boat this time last year. After one summer sailing it, he now has it up for sale. Said that it is a great boat, but too light for open water. He has a lot of sailing experiance on larger boats, but this is the first that he has owned. Another sailing friend has also said the same thing about the Catalina.. good day boat, but not for the open seas. If you are serious about buying a boat, check these statements out with your friends and try one before you buy. Too large of an investment to make a mistake and want to upgrade..... that is unless you are extremely wealthy and don't care about what you spend..... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Takin\' the wife out to dinner...

Bob,
The Catalina 34 is a nice boat.... You'd love it... I have a Catalina 36, the next one up from that... It is also a great boat.... The C34 fully rigged and ready to cruise is running about 125K these days...

Make that dream happen it will be worth every penny... You'll love it.

P.S. My wife wants to move up to the 42 footer....

Regards,
Chris

Re: Takin\' the wife out to dinner...

Junkman,

I have the Catalina 36 and I don't find it to be too light at all.

Now If you use the boat as it was designed as a coastal cruiser you won't have any problems. It is not a "Bluewater" boat. To achieve that would take much more explanation than anyone wants on a tractor forum.

I have taken mine through 15 to 16 foot seas without the slightest problem.

That said I would not sail it across the north atlantic.

"Bluewater" boats end up costing 3 to 4 times what a Catalina costs. I would say your friend didn't do his research and then blamed the boat for being what it was advertised to be. That being a coastal cruiser.

There are lots of Catalina yachts that have circunavigated the globe... I wouldn't do it but....

Like a tractor you have to use a boat for what it is designed to do.....

Regards,
Chris

Re: Takin\' the wife out to dinner...

To the contrary, he did his homework, but after buying the boat, realized that he wanted more than the boat could do. Just like tractors.. after having a small one, you want the next size up. As far as boats for me are concerned, I see them as holes in the water that you pour $$$$ into and never fill up. My wife sees my old cars the same way. That is the nice thing about this country. We are all free to pursue our own dreams and there is no right or wrong, just differences of opinions. Is your boat the one that I see on the front lawn going to the town hall during the off season??

Re: Takin\' the wife out to dinner...

Junkman,
No that is not my boat... I don't have a pic on the road here but I'll attach a pic of the same model a friend has.

Boats do cost buckets of money there is no question about it. If you use is and enjoy it, its worth the money. I see boats at our marina that never go out.... Not once in a season...

Some people use them as what I call Dock Condos, just a place to party... Other people use them.... We use ours a lot, every weekend in fact.

I don't have it trucked home because the costs are too high. I store it at the marina.

Regards,
Chris

Re: Takin\' the wife out to dinner...

take a look at this 90 meter schooner in these pictures.
It is named the Athena and was scheduled to launch in
September 2004. The owner is Jim Clark, founder of
Netscape. Athena has two cat 3516 engines.
My wife gave me the pictures as she is a marketing
manager for CAT marine engine sales.

Re: Takin\' the wife out to dinner...

I was trying to resist hijacking this thread but what the heck...

Saw something on TV the other day about Super-Yachts. $10 million plus price tags. Owned by the wealthiest of the rich. One they featured was finished in artwork by the likes of Picasso, Renoir and others. What amazed me is that most are available for hire. One in particular you could rent for a week at a time, bring along 100 or so of your favorite friends for right around $100,000. Sounds like a bargain, right? Perhaps the next TBN get-together?

Back to tractors: My John Deere was built by one of the leading marine diesel engine manufacturers (Yanmar).

Back to the thread: My wife is calling me for dinner. She sounds grumpy. Must be time to take her out /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
