I cover the tops only, and leave the sides open for air to move through the stack. I do place most pieces bark side up. I don't cover all my wood, only that which i expect to burn in the next few weeks, i don't have room on the porch to store much wood, only a couple days worth. When we are burning wood i stock it every chance i get

I cover my woodpiles after a long dry stretch and definitely towards Fall. You can get used lumber covers from your local discount Lumber place..Menards, Home Depot, etc just for asking. They work well for a couple of seasons.

Bark side down for the bottom row.
I don't cover mine either.

It's obvious none of you live in the Puget Sound Region of WA State. We don't have the cold winters to freeze dry it, but lots of rain to soak it up. We cover only the top and about a foot down the side to ventilate. Full tarping here is guaranteed early rot, slugs, and other bugs. We cut, split, and stack it in the summer/early fall and cover before Oct. Works well. You will see as many ways of covering as there wood piles.

Never a tarp here either. If anything, just an ole sheet of tin on top of the pile. Tarps trap any moisture and help mold/mildew grow.

I keep mine under roof now. Before the roof, I covered the pile to keep the blocks from freezing together & avoid bringing ice into the house! ~~ grnspot

I use the holz hausen (Build a holz hausen to dry firewood by Doug Fluckiger Issue #132) but I also came across a german way to stack firewood stack rebuilt german style

I do put them on pallets to keep them off the ground. When doing green wood I will leave them in a pile for a few weeks and then stack. I like this method because 1. it looks nice, and sheds snow, 2. you can put smaller rounds in the middle, this makes it much more stable.

I find I can also store a lot more wood in the same space.
I just throw a tarp over it once snow is on its way.

I stack between trees and use 15# roofing felt. It covers the top, is water proof and reasonably priced. Oh and it is black also.
