If walking on snow and ice is too risky, in case you fall and damage again, try to walk in water instead of on snow:
Swimming is a great way to get your internal machinery going, without overstraining any joints or muscles, because there is less weight on your back when floating in water.
They do it with injured race horses too...

I am not sure the type of fracture only that there was bone chips floating around that would have caused me problems if left alone. My fracture was the L1 also. They removed the bone and two disc and fused the area with cadaver bone. I really do not have much pain now and hopefully it will only get better.
