Congratulations Gumby! Thanks for the pictures. I love the location of your house. It looks like the kind of place you will always have a job for that beautiful new tractor. I'm also envious of your building. That is a very nice addition for keeping your tractor out of the weather and providing a place to do work and maintenance. I bet it's impossible to wipe the smile off your face. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks Jim,

And yes, this smile may be permanent. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Question...

What are your thoughts regarding using this tractor on the slopes of my property?

I figure I would be heading up and down hill parallel to the slope, no significant turning toward left or right tip danger. The need would be to drag logs down hill (end first to prevent rolling). I know the bucket quickly pushed into the ground would provide some emergency braking, and the slower the better.

I wonder if there are any tables or figures for rearward or forward tip hazard for this model tractor.

Also, do you know of a hydraulic winch option for these tractors?

I have the rear remote that would make this a possibility...may be the better way to deal with hauling on the more severe slopes.

Your terrain is pretty darn challenging for any tractor. I don't remember if you said you loaded your tires, but I'd do that very quickly. You want to keep the CG low. Also, just make it a practice when you are moving with a load in the bucket that you keep the bucket 6" to 1' from the ground and be ready to drop the weight if a rear tire starts to lift. Generally, if that loader arm crossbar is below the level of the hood, you are okay. But even so, you may get a little tipsy in the right circumstances. Good low rear ballast and low CG is definitely your friend. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Also, go up and down hills. You'll learn what you can go across, but even the slightest bump on the high side and it will make your rear end pucker pretty good sometimes. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

One more tip is to always keep the tractor in 4WD while working on hills. That way you will have front braking as well as rear. If you keep your loads low, you should not have any problem with rearing or tipping forward. Your tractor will slide downhill before tipping happens. However, if your slide takes you sideways, look out...always try to steer yourself straight. Don't lock the brakes in an uncontrollable panic slide. Your HST transmission should provide great braking without ever having to touch the brake pedal except on the steepest inclines.

Gumby, I don't really know much about winches or logging. I'm afraid my advice would do more harm than good. Surely someone with some real experience will chime in and give you some good advice. I do know that your hydraulic pump only supplies 6 gpm maximum flow, and that may limit your choices in winches. My guess is that most winches want to have around 12 gpm, but again, this is not my area of expertise.

Thanks Jim,

The rears are loaded. And I intended to use all the precautions you mentioned. I think the winch will be a definate plus dealing with logs on the more severe slopes.

The hydraulic winches don't seem to require any where near the flow other implements do. Posts on the forum here seem to favor the hydraulic units over the PTO models, for cost and usability reasons. Some models are meant to be run by a power steering pump with as little as 4 gal per minute. I figure the flow and pressure the TC30 can produce is more than sufficient.

I was just hoping you may have some experience with this add on. From your posts here on TBN your advice seems pretty dead on.

I thank you again for what you have added to this thread.

Gumby6,

Excellent pics & many thanks. What an incredible place you have just from the little I see in the pics. That tractor of yours fits in perfectly.

Some of your slopes seem quite steep. There's no way I would try to go on those (the steeper ones) even if you are only going up & down parallel let alone dragging something down. Maybe a little bit of an alarmist but just thinking of your safety. You can probably go down something steeper than go up. Keep your ROPS up (not sure if yours fold) & make sure you wear your seatbelt. As jinman says, try the slopes out first & test them out. You will get an uncomfortable feeling (I've been there) when your trying to do something you should'nt. Listen to your inner thoughts at this time & slowly get out of the situation.

Have Fun & Stay SAFE !!
