Hi All,

I've read through all of the threads on non-starting Boomers and I now have one. Today, after jump starting my 2003 TC40D, I worked for about 5 minutes and the tractor just stopped. Heck, I was just at a high idle working with the FEL and she quit fast, like it was electrical. After that, it would crank but not start or even attempt to kick in.

Tomorrow I will check all fuses, the seat switch, parking switch, etc. Anyone want to guess the issue on this particular "non starting" challenge?

Thanks,

sounds like you are trying the known problems, check all interlock items. May want to look at fuel solenoid.

Tom, when you tried to start it, did you set the parking brake? If you set the parking brake and it still did not start, it is probably not the seat switch. For the tractor to be running and then stop suddenly, it has to be the seat switch or fuel solenoid. It could also be trash in the fuel, but that doesn't normally cause the engine to stop suddenly as you described. I guess it could be a bad ignition switch, but I think that is a very, very slim possibility.

When fuse #2 blows or the neutral safety or pto safety interlocks are open, the starter motor will not crank, so I think you are not having fuse problems.

I'll bet on fuel selonoid.

Yeah Andy, except when the solenoid goes bad it usually takes out fuse #2 and the starter won't crank the engine. That's why I think this related to the seat switch. I'm sure Tom will tell. :)

PTO switch/safety interlock. left side under the fender.

Since I don't have a Boomer I'll defer to you . I've lost 2 fuel selonoids over the years, one in a 2120 and one in a TN and both times the engine cranked. Does the engine crank with the seat switch non activated? doesn't seem like it should. Personally I like the 2120 which has no seat switch, I routinely start it while standing on the side so it warms up. I know I know it could run me over but I check both trannies to be in neutral first and it won't start if not in neutral.

Thanks all for the replies. I only had time to check the fuses as I had to spend the day helping my neighbor work his cows. All of the fuses were fine so that isn't the issue. I'm pretty sure I tried placing the parking brake when I was starting but I'll try that again. I'll focus on the fuel solenoid when I get a chance.

I ended up using the JX to finish the harrowing that I had to get done. Costs a bit more in fuel, but it has a cab. :)

Jiman maybe on the money. Turn the key on, and remove the wire clip from the fuel silnoid. Listen for a slight click when disconnected, and then also when reattached. Could just be a loose connection onto the silnoid. Just had the same thing with my sender unit from a water temp sender. Just a loose connection. Worth a checking.

That's a good tip, but I don't think you even need to disconnect anything. The fuel solenoid is on the right side of the tractor on the same side as the ignition switch and down by the oil filter. If you set the parking brake and turn on the key, you should be able to hear it click. You just have to be sure what you are hearing is not the glowplug relay and timer.

Also, here's another tip. If the parking brake works and the tractor starts, just release the brake, but hold up on the parking brake handle to keep the light on and you will be able to drive the tractor without the engine dying. That way if the seat switch is bad you "fool" the tractor into thinking the brake is set when it is not. At least that is the way my tractor works.
