dave1949,
thanks for the concern. No, I haven't been laying under the tractor for the last week.

I finally got to it last Friday. I had parked it in a corner of the heated riding arena until I could get to it when instructors weren't giving riding lessons and I could have free use of the arena for test drives. Even after a few days of it being parked there, the horses were still acting a little spooky every time they went by the "big blue scary thing in the corner". It was cordoned off with jump standards and poles so a little kid wouldn't run her pony into it but was probably still a hazard.

Anyway, I adjusted the clutch. Good news and bad news. First time, I went the wrong way and NOTHING would move. So, I went the other way and got all gears in all ranges to work ok. That's the good news. Bad news is it's at the end of adjustment travel and figure it'll be a clutch job next time.

Thanks for all of the input.

jinman,
I still have the issue of the FWD lever stuck and you mentioned it to be a "common" issue. Anything other than a BFH to get it resolved?

You have to "tickle" the 4wWD lever by going foreward, then backwards slightly. My TC48 is like that. It then just slips out of 4WD. Very easy, and has never been stuck either in or out of 4WD.

That's been my experience too, when it's ready it goes easily, when it's not ready you have to 'tickle' some more with forward and back. Level ground helps. The decal makes no sense (to me at least) be sure you know which way you will move the lever, pull up or push down. Push down to go from 4wd to 2wd.
Dave.

Thanks guys, I'll do a little "tickling" this week on the FWD. Truth is, the workers that operate it don't even KNOW it has 4wd.

The owner has a TC45 & a TC35 that is usually hooked up to a manure spreader. (I'm very jealous of those machines). Told me the other day that she'd like to get a 3rd tractor so she could have a drag AND water trailer always hooked up during show season withoug unhooking the spreader but she can't afford it. I told her that she doesn't need to spend over 10 grand to haul a water trailer, could get an older 2000 or even 9n that would do it.

The easiest way to change from FWD to 2WD is to raise the front wheels off the ground with the FEL if it has one. Tawilson mentioned that in an earlier post. If it has no FEL, then you have to do the forward/backward and side-to-side routine. If it is stuck really badly and you just cannot get it out without bending the lever, you can jack the front wheels off the ground to relieve the tension. If you had a strong clutch, I'd say to put the tractor in low-low and pop the clutch to get the front tires in the air for a second. That will relieve the pressure too, but doin' wheelies might raise the owner's blood pressure, especially if one of her tractors has a slipping clutch.;)

jinman,
yeah, I saw that suggestion and it DOES have a FEL, so I'm going to try that first. Don't need to get the owner stressed out any more than she is, so I won't be poppin' wheelies around the barn. :) thanks.

This is not uncommon. The Kubota I recently sold sometimes I had to "tickle" it. Same with the old Jeep CJ5, and a couple pickup I used to have. Especially, coming out of low range 4 wheel drive.

Have not had enough time on my TC40 to know if it acts like that too. Had it since Superbowl Sunday, and have been so busy remodeling and taking care of a family member, I have only had about 20 minutes on the tractor!

For my TC35 I either pull or push (depending on whether engaging or disengaging) on the FWD lever while letting out the clutch slowly. It always engages.

Also, if I just steer slowly to the left or right it will usually disengage with no problem.
