Teflon tape on hydraulic fittings

Question on the 545 cure time: The graphs in the product info above all talk about "breakaway strength" in regard to cure time, temp etc. I would normally be interested in cure time in regard to sealing hydraulic pressure rather than "breakaway strength" which I understand as resistance to "coming loose" mechanically.
What is your advice on normal curing time prior to using to prevent leakage? I ask because I'm normally needing to "get back on the road" after fixing a leak, so to speak.
They make it in fast cure versions.

But usually the time it takes me to assemble....pick up tools and clean up the mess....it's ample time for it not to leak.

Use LOCTITE 545 when required. It's for hydraulic systems.

I can not even get PTFE tape to seal on NPT water pipe plumbing sure as hell not going it do it on high pressure hydraulics....

There must be some secret to using the tape that no one has ever shared with me....

With NPT, a thread sealant is necessary because the threads in the male are not full threads, as such, when screwed into a female end there is a spiral "gap" right through the connected joint.
However with NPTF (Dryseal), there is a full thread on both male and female ends which means a full thread contact throughout. So no sealant required.
Yes Teflon tape is a big no-no in hydraulics. Only to be used as an emergency measure and replaced ASAP. It should never be used on JIC or UNO joints, it only stuffs up the sealing even more.

I don't recall ever having an issue with the tape not sealing on 3000 PSI hydraulics. There have been occasions where I've had to wrap several revolutions to get some thickness.
I know some folks maintain that the tape is only to reduce friction to allow more thread engagement but I've found that several wraps provides more material for sealing.

Yes alot pf people repeat that.

Its a fundamental difference between theory and reality. What some engineer somewhere things will work when drawn out on paper....but in reality it isnt the case

I recently installed a diverter valve on my tractor and used some thread sealant that I had available. After it sat overnight, I started the tractor and noticed several leaks at the fittings. I had teflon tape available so I removed all of the fittings and wrapped them with tape keeping away from the ends. I started the tractor and had no leaks. Tape seems to work for me and I guess that's what really counts.

Exactly, to be honest with you I don't know how most of us have managed on the farm all these years with this teflon tape that we use, you're last sentence pretty much sums it up.

I use tape regularly on NPT hydraulic fittings, it's like any other sealant/lubricant, proper application is the key. I've checked fittings after assembly and opened up hyd. filters after hundreds of hours of use with no signs of tape entering the system.

A number of manufacturers use tape on hydraulic fittings, guess nobody told them they weren't supposed to.

The "Great Tape Debate" may go down in the TBN annals as one of the all time greats! I always enjoy these discussions!

Bottom line--use what works for YOU, liquid sealant or tape.
