Tell me how to create and renovate pastures

I apologize this took so long. Maybe you already got your answer but I will tell you what I do.

Spray everything with glyphosate (Roundup or Generic Brand) Make sure it is at least 41% Gly. It will say it on the jug.

1st spray I use 2 quarts gly in my 15 gallon sprayer. It will do one acre for me. If the weeds are tall, cut them down first then wait at least a week before spraying.

Disk or till and prepare the seed bed by dragging. You can use a box spring, chain link fence, pallet or something like that. Cultipack twice. Let the weeds grow again, spray again, let them grow, spray again. I don't plant until late summer, early fall where I am in the U.P. of Michigan.

Once the weeds are under control, you can rough up the surface of the soil with the drag. Cultipack once, broadcast the seed and fertilizer, cultipack twice and your are good to go. This should give your seeds a head start especially if you plant in the fall because most of the weeds are going dormant by then. Next year the seeds will have a head start over the weeds because they have been given time to get established. This is what I do with my horse pasture too. Make sure the PH is between 6.2 and 7 for the pasture. A soil test will tell you this.

I am not a fan of ploughs. They dig deep and bring up more weed seed but they also destroy humus in the soil. Don't expect a fast growing grass to choke out weeds. If you have a dry period, the weeds will take over, that's why I recommend spraying. If you continue to disturb the soil, especially more than 4 inches, expect a weed problem unless you want to replant every year. Farmers in my area don't plow anymore. They disk but they are able to set the disk to so many inches, plus, they do spray.

My soil is very sandy so that's why I compact the soil with the cultipacker so many times. When the soil is compact, it brings water up from below the surface where the roots are plus it helps to hold the moisture in the soil. Good luck and let me know if you have more questions.

I get my soil tests back within 7 days after I send them out. I use Whitetal Institutes and it costs me about $17. This includes me having to ship them out via mail.

Believe it or not, one of my most used implements for my fields is a landscape rake (rock rake) to prepare the soil after spraying. It helps to level the ground and if needed, clear debris so I have good seed to soil contact. I don't use my disk or tiller very much anymore. I focus on disbturbing the soil the least amount possible.

Hope this helps.
