I've posted this before on different threads but here goes again.

The place I worked at for 33 years at one time had one of the worst safety records in the US for the size factory it was (1500-2000 workers). After some serious injuries the company and union got together and started a safety committee. And every time there was an accident, no matter how small, the workers were drug tested. They were escorted to the first aid station and a company and union official stayed with them until the outside drug testing guy arrived. After some walked out rather than be tested, and others were fired our safety record improved to one of the best in the country for that size factory.

That was only one of the factors but it was the main one.

My old employer and current employer drug test after any physical injury on the job. At my old job, many people were terminated after testing positive. At my current job, not many people get injured, and I haven't seen anyone get terminated in the almost 6 years I've been there. Different demographics between employers.

It's one of the reasons I don't smoke pot, even in places where it's legal. I'm sure I'd enjoy it. I'm sure I'd be sober by Monday morning. But with my luck, some kid on an electric scooter would hit me on the sidewalk while I was clocked in, I'd get tested, and fail from residual in my blood. Not worth it. I like my job. I can wait until I retire.

It used to take 30 days for it to get out your blood stream. If the new stuff is a potent as they say, I suspect it might take longer now.
Apparently it isn't your father's Buick joint.
That doesn't mean that you are under the influence for that long, it also takes 3 days for alcohol to clear your system.

We're about 2-3 miles from the Michigan border where it's legal for recreational use. One of the small towns nearby embraced it, and has half a dozen stores in their downtown area now. It's kind of amazing how it has brought some life back into their downtown, as other businesses have opened up now.

I tried it out of curiosity a few times when I was in my 20s, didn't do a thing for me. Then again, I don't like any substance that makes you high/stoned/drunk, etc. Some apparently find it a pleasant feeling, but it's very much the opposite for me. Different metabolism maybe?

I never have tried nor had an urge to try pot.

Always worked at a place that drug tested (sometimes randomly) and didnt want the risk.

But now that its legal so many places, I am curious to see how they adapt.

For example, Its illegal to drink or be under the influence while on the job. Yet on the evenings and weekends you can drink so long as you are sober while on the job.

However.....they seem to take a different approach with weed. I dont understand now how they can justify the level of control of a person while off the clock. IF someone wants to go to colorado for a weekend, smoke some weed, they shouldnt have to be fearful of loosing their job the following week, because they broke no laws and were not under the influence while on company time. Therefore IMO, its a pretty Signiant infringement on personal freedom, trying to control employees off-clock time.

There are a lot of potential truck drivers who aren't available due to Federal regulations because they can't pass the p test.

Oh, I used to smoke the heck out of it back in my teens and early 20s. I enjoyed it tremendously. I'm sure I would again today. I've got a few more years until retirement, and I'm sure I'll enjoy it again then. In the mean time, I have responsibilities that I want to fulfill without drama, so I can wait. I can ride the rowing machine for an hour or two and pass out from exhaustion if I need to. 😬

I tried it one time when I was in my early 20's. I'd been drinking a bit of beer and let into peer pressure from some men in the same barracks as I was. It tended to sober me up and the more I thought about and the ramifications of getting caught such as lossiing my security clearance it was easy to disassociate my self with that crowd and not partake.

It was humorous in many ways while doing contract maintenace and industrial controls drug testing was required prior to many projects. Then my last 13 years of work were with a pharmaceutical manufacture, so doing calibrations for a biologic pharmaceutical didn't require any drug testing, not random or even after any "accidents" I never quite got my head around that fact. Drug testing to work on machines making toilet paper but not products designed to be injected into people.

What I found in my youth was that alcohol is way more destructive to me than pot.

My attitude when drunk was destructive. My attitude when high on pot was mellow, pleasant, and very happy. I never got into trouble when high, but yikes when I was drunk. All kinds of trouble.

Also, the after affects of getting drunk VS getting high are quite different to me. Hangovers, throwing up, etc. VS a dry mouth and I'm hungry. Pot was not hard on my body. Alcohol caused physical issues.

I never felt like I needed a joint. It took me a month to stop drinking at great physical and mental distress at age 24. Once I quit, I didn't have a drop for darn near 25 years. Not until both of our kids were able to take care of themselves as adults, for that matter. I always had it in the back of my mind that if my wife or kids were in danger and I was drunk and couldn't respond as a husband or father should, I'd never forgive myself. The responsibilities of being a good husband and father are great motivators.
