Temp Gauge

No T-stat!! How then does the engine warm in the dead of winter?

My B7100 Kubota does not have a thermostat or water pump and when I have it loaded down plowing snow it easily gets up over 200 degrees F. I guess because until the engine warms up, the water really doesn't circulate much in the cooling system.

Yanmar uses BSTP, (British Standard Tapered Pipe), threads.

Boy, that one really threw me. I would have thought of most anything but!
Thanks for the heads up.
Does that apply to all of the threads on the engine? Any other areas that uses the brit?

As far as I know, only the tapered pipe connections that are tapped into the motor block are BSPT = Brit Tapered Pipe Thread. That includes water pipe connections and the senders for temperature and oil. All of the normal engine and frame nuts and bolts are metric.

That is, I don't think there are any other Brit tapered pipe.......if so, I haven't run across them. The use of BSPT - which is also known simply as BSP - for tapered pipe connections tapped into the cast iron block isn't so rare in Japanese manufacturing. Lots of their cars do the same. As several people have pointed out, if the tapered pipe threads in the block are a little bit corroded then you can sometimes force a US NPT in for a turn or two. I know that works because I used to do it myself before I found out what the real story was. But it never really felt right and I always worried about those joints - particularly the sender for the oil gauge.

Guess I am going to have to get a BSP tap and die set-as do not care for the "light" and want to know temp absolute numbers rather than relative dial.
Again, thanks for heads up as I surely would have screwed it up due to ignorance.

scopx, check the threads on the old sender before you go and tap anything.

While the oil pressure sender is BSP, I'm pretty sure the water temp sender is Metric, probably M16 X 1.5.

Here's an old thread discussing this.

Thanks:

Do have at least one "set" of general gauges put back for rainy day install. Am sure they are SAE and will require adapters.
Did read and found to be educational. Also went back and read the thread concerning lowest working rpm which was referred to in same postings.

You won't need the tap and dies. The engine block is already British - as are many Japanese cars. You can leave the block just as it is because any gauge set you buy will be either metric or NTP, and since the Brit thread is so common, most car parts places carry brass thread adapters for Japanese tapered thread. Sports car shops and independent mechanics use adapters a lot. The first place I tried had never heard of them...the next place had a box right there next to the counter. It might take two adapters because if you adapt to a "T" you can run the warning light and the gauge at the same time.
good luck, rScotty

yep it is metric. when i put the gauges on mine i used an m16 x 1.5 barbed fitting that i machined up and tapped for the new sender.
