Blueriver; You are making me hungry, and I've already eaten! :licking:

Western; Thanks for the update! I hope she does well, and never needs the invasive stuff. Get some good rest. You need and deserve it.

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers y'all, had I been awake and thinking I would have posted in the family place.

They found 2 blockages, both 60%, but due to the location (at vein junctions) they felt it best to attack it with Diet, exercise and mainly a focus on stress (along with some meds) This is their 1st idea and re-evaluate in 6 months.

They showed me the film, showing the blockages using the dyes, both effect the right side, so she will continue to get tire and will have to work on her stamina.

Got kinda "quite" sitting there from 11am -5pm being the only family in town. She is to be discharged around 7pm, and some friends from church, are taking her to their house since she already had turned off her utilities to go on her trip.

Positive thing is she now knows what is wrong and has a good grasp on how to deal with it, we'll see.

Again thanks for the thoughts, kind of "blind sided" me this morning, but the call could have been much worse I suppose. Still scary when she's the only "mama" I got! The wife already told me (many times) "I aint you're mother"

Think I'll go pass out now.

YES! Sounds like it turned out much better than it could have been. We'll keep her on the prayer list. Will she have to cancel her trip? I hope she still gets to go. She's probably really been looking forward to it and it may be really good for her.

Thanks guy's for the encouragement and ideas.

Don I will order that book. The biggest factor for her we think is stress, Doctor thought so too. She has been raising my nieces (3) even through the death of my step-dad, active in the church woman's deal and always helping people, on top of that she is a hospice nurse:confused3:. We have been telling her to "stop and smell the roses" for several years now, she has done her share:D

A week ago My brother and I took the two youngest girls, because mom finally reached out and knew something was wrong. She is one of the most independent woman I have ever known, so admitting something like this doesn't come easy. We thought she was "too" active, meaning outside of her own care. Both of her parents died in her home under hospice care.

As far as diet, she has that part down pretty good, being vegan based on her religious beliefs. Cardiologist said she has an amazingly good diet (better than his LOL) He feels the biggest threat for her now is stress and her trip would do her good.

My brother and I hadn't planned on "adopting" but I guess you have to stand up and do you're part when the need arises, at least I got the 17 year old:D Unfortunately for the 1st time, I have gotten cross with my sister, since her life choice have trumped the care of her kids. Being "temperamental", I have done my best to stay out of the "family politics", but after sitting there alone yesterday waiting 5 hrs to talk to the surgeon, I ended up a bit perturbed.

Sorry for the long "soap box" reply, besides two ex- LEO friends, you guys are the "onliest" friends I have:laughing::thumbsup:

Western; Talking often helps, and you are among friends here. So, if you need to get on that soapbox, do not hesitate.

Vegan diet, and heart/vessel blockages. I thought that diet was supposed to prevent such as that. :confused3:

I hope your mom gets to make the trip, and enjoy herself. It sounds like she has done her share, and should get a little fun. She has more than earned it!

Keep us posted, and let us know if we can help.

Dennis, since she is vegan she is halfway there. The next part is no fat which I think is the hardest. There was a movie made just for her "Forks over Knives" that is "food" forks over "surgical" knives. It goes right along with Esselstyn's book and will put things in perspective for her. It has people like your Mom that needed surgery but 20 years later they are still doing fine, symptom free, and that is where we want Mom to be. She is fortunate to have a family that is there to help reduce the stress in her life.

I remember Esselstyn's notifying president Clinton after seeing him eating a fatty roll on TV "Even vegans get heart disease" in an effort to keep Clinton off the surgical table. President Clinton Credits Caldwell Esselstyn MD for Decision to go Plant-Based - Vegsource.com

I had just gone vegan about 2 months before my heart attack and in recovery I was mad and thinking what am I missing. After reading Esselstyn's book there was as Ah ha moment. During recovery I was very strict and it paid off with 100% of the heart function returning. The more research and the more cardiologists I talk to only encourage this strict lifestyle. I just wish I had all this knowledge years BEFORE my heart attack so the plaque would have been stabilized or reduced. I'm sure the impending bypass is just as much incentive as a heart attack - I bet she will do just fine.

Don, I think the "vegan" lifestyle has a huge disadvantage in it can be a "false" sense of security. many factors can and do effect heart health as you have learned though you're experience. A good diet is only part of the journey. I think she will have more trouble adjusting her personality and not let things effect her outlook as far as stress goes. As you pointed out, it is all intertwined and a whole lifestyle change usually is needed for prime heart health, then throw in the gene pool, with a dash of Heart disease kills more woman than anything else ( MVD and broken heart syndrome.) Much easier to sit on the couch and eat a MacDonalds:D The average American lifestyle doesn't work well for heart health.

Going to get myself a stress test scheduled, I know by my lifestyle, I am a prime candidate due to lax choices. Started off pretty good under the thumb of my parents:laughing:

Man, has the weather been good! 34* this morning and winds have been bearable!! Weekend looks like decent fish'n weather too (my stress reliever:laughing:)

FG, the vegan lifestyle sure helps, but from what the cardiologist said, Woman have a different mechanism dealing with stress, even though stress effects men as well, you girls can have complications since y'all "fester" more:D Not word for word what he said, but close. I think he was attempting to lighten the mood after telling me there wasn't much he could do unless it gets critical.

OH, he (Cardiologist)also said the blockage could have went undetected with just an EKG/ routine stress test? I will ask my dad later today about that one. He is a heart health fanatic (my dad ) but not a cardiologist. Has a PhD in Psychology and a Masters in Public health, theology and a bunch of other stuff (chronic student) pretty smart fella, That would prove I fell far from the tree!!

Anybody ever hear that?

That is absolutely correct. Before my heart attack I passed EKG/Stress test with flying colors - they couldn't make it go any faster. That is why I asked FG the type of heart test airline pilots get. The EKG/Stress Test they get will not ensure the pilot has no plaque that could break off and cause an in-flight heart attack.

My 12 lead EKG did show that I had heart damage up to a year after my heart attack but the last one I took did not. (That little squiggly line that used to go down at the wrong place doesn't anymore.)

Because the open flames bring extra moisture into the home that will ruin the particle board.

Kyle why wouldn't an outside air vent that goes directly to a wood burning stove (a closed air system) not be allowed? That is what I have and the humidity level is not a problem. It is also a lot warmer since the flames do not suck in cold outside air into the house.

Thanks Don, I will opt for the more in-depth test then, if given the option. Cant fix it if ya don't know its broke! I know when Mom was in the cath lab, they used a heart stimulant while she was in "twilight" along with the dye. The stress test in the Doctors office, I guess just made them "suspicious".

Not sure about all the dynamics of it, but our warranty stated no gas stove, water heater, etc. There are different wood burning stoves that are approved for mobile homes and they basically have double walls and most of the heat goes up the flume IIRC. Not near as much convection heating off the stove as a good old Ben Franklin stove.

Dennis,
I am so glad to hear your mom is not going to need surgery now.
It sounds like she, you, and your family are a good working team.
I went through all this with my mom and with me being an only child had a lot to learn and all the responsibility which I gladly accepted.

I will offer one caution.
Some people live on stress. I know you will be careful in your approach in reducing hers.
Sometimes the psychological effect of taking away things that people live for can have
a debilitating effect of its own. It sounds like she has always been a loving nurturing person
and this is a very important part of her being.
It's kinda like us guys when we have to go to our dad and convince him that it is time to
give up his car keys. Seems like a small logical step to us when we are in our 50's but to a man in his 70-80's
it can make them feel worthless and trapped.

Ron thanks and your 1000% right.

I told mother last night before I left, she has the information, she knows the drill, now it's up to her. We will be there, but ultimately she has to take steps to relax.

Kyle, what warranty? The Mobile home warranty?

We rented a double wide while living in Colorado and it was all gas. The one we have now since we didnt build, has a fireplace with a circulation fan built in. It does draw from a screened flue under the house. Maybe I missed the point, wouldn't be the 1st time:laughing: BTW, ours is double walled also on both sides (corner FP)

As I recall Brandi said the rotten floor in her trailer was a result of her son overfilling the bathtub. Nothing to do with heating or cooking systems.

I had a trailer in California way back in the 60's since I was a young officer with not enough rank to qualify for base housing. We cooled it
with a "Swamp cooler" as most other folks did in those days. The swamp cooler was a bunch of filters in a roof box in the hall that were constantly saturated with water and a fan sucked the water cooled air into the trailer. It did a great job and in those days trailers were skinned with metal and walled with cheap plywood paneling.

Don, I think the "vegan" lifestyle has a huge disadvantage in it can be a "false" sense of security. )

Unless the words no fat are accompanied by the word vegan all sorts of red flags go up for me. Hidden fat, artery clogging, endothelium damaging oils are everywhere and need to be avoided. Some of the vegan oils/fats are worse than animal fats. This is not saying animal fats are good they are bad also. Some of the Fake vegan foods are worse also. This is not saying animal foods are better they are bad also for people with heart disease. Some hidden really bad partially hydrogenated fats are in powdered coffee creamers and caned biscuits and rolls.

Western, have you read the labels on the items in you Moms pantry and refrigerator?

A really good nutritionist I found specifically for vegans to find the hidden culprits that contribute to heart disease is Jeff Novick.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXi998JX8YM

Here is a brief web page where that talks about unhealthy vegans from Caldwell Esselstyn's son Rip, part of the E2. Plant-Strong to Plant-Wrong: How to Ruin a Perfectly Healthy Meal (PLUS a Giveaway!) | The Engine 2 Diet

I know you are blaming stress as the #1 culprit in this situation and that sounds correct with the little I know, but keep an eye open for the foods that will cancel out her healthy vegan diet.

Dr. Esselstyn's quote of the day: "If you eat unhealthy foods in moderation you will have a moderate heat attack."

It was water from the front bathtub overflowing and was replaced when a crack developed at the drain..........and.......................condensation in the ducts while the air conditioner runs during the summer. My tub had a crack in it that I did not notice until I stepped in a corner while cleaning it. Particle board under toilets don't last long either. ABS tubs suck.

We always put a pot of water on top of our wood stove. I thought the fire in the wood stove took out moisture, thus the reason to put more moisture in the air by the pot of water????????
hugs, Brandi

Dennis,
Just caught up reading two days of posts here. So sorry to hear about your Mom, but glad to hear she can whip it without surgery. Prayers have been sent. Will she still be going on her trip?
hugs, Brandi
