Scalp what? Aerate what?
hugs, Brandi
I think we have different ideas on what scalping means. To me, it is when the mower takes the top off of an old fire ant mound and cuts the grass away enough to just see dirt. Also, mowing with the mowers gauge wheels too high and the deck digs in on one side in a fast turn. Or cutting donuts with the zero turn Hustler.

Ha! Yes - just a little different, but I'll admit that I sometimes deploy the "fire ant scalp" as well, usually unintentionally. The term scalp is just a really clean, short cut for the first mow of the season. Helps cut off dead/dormant blades and and allows sun to get to new growth. Also makes aerating more productive. We usually mow our St Augustine at 4" in the heat of summer to give it a fighting chance of staying alive if there is not much rain. Looking at it this way, a cut of 1-2 inches is effectively a scalping. We also rake up the dead thatch that gets dislodged during this process and add that to compost pile.

I had to make sure I wasn't crazy and did find lots of others doing it too. I think the risk of a hard freeze has passed now, so the clock is ticking on this one.

Maybe, maybe not. Good luck with that. I know we suppose to have a mild winter, because of the less than abundant acorn crop. But I'm not gonna hold my breath.

I think your acorns are smarter than mine. I had a pretty good crop, enough that they would roll when I walk on them. I fell three times this year from those acorns. We still had a mild winter.
I have been out there kicking them. Hopefully, I kicked some sense into them.

You think maybe they are tripping me as pay back?

I think my live oak produced more acorns in 2015 than any year in the last 10. And now the Bradford Pear trees are blooming.

Our apple trees are in bloom,, but not the pecan yet,, I don't know how many acorns hit the ground because of all the wild hogs.. I did hear someone say that a blind one found one..
All I know for sure,, it was a wet winter.. with mostly a normal temperature.. except for a couple of Mondays and one Friday..
If it ever dries a bit I will be mowing my pastures.. smile it Tuesday.. Lou

Don't remember the website I saw it on but it showed our average last day of frost is March 11. I'm a hundred miles north of Houston so take that with a grain of salt.

It's settled - I'm getting out the mower and pitch forks this weekend. After all is cut short and mulch is spread, then the aerator and tractor can get a workout. Is there a Spring and Summer thread as well? :D

On March 20, this thread gets mothballed till the Fall and the Spring/Summer thread takes it's place.
The talk this morning was If you are mad vote for Trump if you're smart vote for Cruz. Voting was crowded I had to wait 15 minutes. Our county started a new voting system, you can vote at any of the voting places in the county and both Democrats and Republicans at each place.

Thanks foreman and txdon - I'll keep an eye out for that other thread. Thank you gentlemen also for voting - it is so important.

I voted early back on Feb 16th. In and out in 10 minutes from seat, to booth, to seat of truck. I am grateful for our freedoms and was able to vote for the first time here in the States.

Back in 1993 I immigrated here from Canada LEGALLY for schooling at OU, and have stayed in God's country ever since. I decided after the politically tumultuous first half of 2014 to finally pull the trigger and naturalize as a US Citizen. 6 months of paperwork and a thousand bucks later, here I am - officially American. I love Canada still as well, but it was time to have some representation to go along with my taxation, and time to formally pledge my allegiance to the US in front of the Federal Judge... I sure wish everyone would take a few minutes to get educated on their candidates, (Local, State and Federal,) and know their positions. Then when the time comes they can go vote their conscience and be part of the solution. We have to get our national debt under control, create more jobs and businesses, and work to restore our infrastructure and industries that made America great in the first place. If you missed today's primary, please consider showing up in November to exercise your right to vote and exercise your freedoms that so many have fought and died for. God Bless America!

I'll also give you a clue as to how a Canadian Immigrant who works in the oil patch, married an Okie, and lives in Texas leans ideologically. If anyone tells you how great Europe and socialized everything is - send 'em my way for a first hand education from someone who's lived and breathed it and still has family affected daily. At least Canada was relatively conservative for the past couple decades and didn't dive into the mess that is Europe these days. Stay safe and God Bless everyone regardless of their political views! (Back to tractors now...)

Interesting take from someone who's been there done that.

Aeration of yards in our neck of the woods where fescue is the main grass is recommended to be done in the fall as well as over seeding.

Snowback our son while in college his advisor is my age 62 graduated college same year I did moved to Paris France and joined the communist party. On his 30th birthday he went to see the head of the communist party in France due in part from his not understanding why those in power had way more than anybody else. After that meeting he disavowed his membership came back to the states got his PH.D. In political science and is now the most conservated minded professor at his college. Fascinating man to talk to. Hopefully you folks don't mind me invading your thread for a moment

180 years ago today, at Washington-on-the-Brazos, the 62 delegates of the people of Texas declared, "the people of Texas do now constitute a free, Sovereign, and independent republic" giving the middle finger to Mexico!
