Please excuse my ignorance you Texas folk but why are you growing crops specifically for and feeding deer? Isn't it illegal to feed wild animals there too?

No,sir!!You can plant it as big as you wont.I plant the plots to fatten them up for my plate and overall its good for the health of the others.

I thought Jinman had the no trespassing signs up to keep the deer out but I see the deer can't read any better down there than up here! We have deer pellets everywhere too and circles pressed down in the grass where they lay at night. I think they watch TV through the windows...
Stay cool.. Best thing for that is a long afternoon nap!

Ron, your place is sure looking awesome. There's something very relaxing about large expanses of green cut grass and ponds of water. You have every reason to be very proud of the work you have done and the results.

We have a day during the week that we call "movie day." Neighbors come over and we kick back in our home theater seats to watch a BBC wildlife or nature Blu-Ray disc on our big screen TV. We have fresh fruit/melons as snacks and just relax and escape the heat for 2 or 3 hours. Around 5 pm, we go out to a local restaurant and have dinner. It's terrific relaxation and an escape from the heat. Yesterday with my thermometer saying 102, we sat inside watching the Arctic ice melt on a disc called, Natures Most Amazing Events. Good stuff!:thumbsup:

So much for the 99 degree day yesterday, DFW airport officially hit 102, it was 103 at my porch.

Here lately I've been getting some pretty good watermelons. Actually got a good one from Wal-Mart!!! They are a good source of "cool" when you've been out for a while.

I think I may have to go to the farmers market in Weatherford and see what those folks have going on.

Jim Did you see on channel 8 news the story on the peaches in Weatherford?? Said they where getting hurt pretty bad by the drought, but the ones at market where nice and on the small side.

Dennis, we drove through the farmer's market last Saturday. It looked like they had plenty of watermelons and cantaloupes in addition to peaches. Most peaches there seem to be priced at $40 per 1/2 bushel. By driving out west on highway 180, we found a peach farm on the So. side of 180 a couple of miles out of town. You drive up this road and turn into their stand hidden behind some trees. They had peaches priced by size for $30, $35, and $40 per half-bushel. They also had cantaloupes for $3 each. I bought one and it was good, but Wednesday afternoon I went to the Walmart in Bowie and they had Texas grown cantaloupes for $1.34 each. They are smallish, but super sweet and have great flavor. That kind of price is why I quit growing cantaloupes. Last year they were less than $1 each at the peak of the season. I'll spend my time growing something else like okra, tomatoes, peppers, and blackeyed peas. I'll get my melons and corn at Walmart.:licking:

One of the things we had yesterday at our movie day was Parker Co. peaches sliced and sweetened with sugar or Splenda and cinnamon sprinkles. If there is any better snack than that, I haven't found it.

We are only 98 at noon in the buckeye state. Mowed late last night and early this morning. My 2 tractor seat covers haven't arrived yet. They were suppossedly shipped last week to arrive this week but I got a message yesterday saying shipped but delayed in transit. Now they are saying July
31st.
This is my first experience using Walmart- Ship to Store for Pickup. Is this their common game or did Jim and I discuss the issue so much on TBN that

A home was completely destroyed by fire near here last night. We could see the smoke in the distance above the tree line. The news said the township fire departments kept having to go for more water but couldn't keep up. After putting in my pond years ago with the idea that perhaps it could be a source of water for fire fighting in this area or at least on my property I was told that pond water is not normally used by fire departments since it could clog or damage their pumps.
Is this the norm in Texas and other states?
Has anyone set up their own high volume gas engine driven pump and lines from their own pond?

Dennis, a month or two ago, I found watermelons at Walmart labelled "Super Sweet" from Forney, TX. So I bought one and have never eaten a better red meat watermelon. Then in a different Walmart a couple of weeks ago, I found some melons with the same label in a big box with melons with a different label. So I got another one of the Forney Super Sweets. It was a good one, but nothing exceptional like the earlier one.

Ron, I didn't use Walmart.com. I ordered from Amazon.com ang got free shipping since I ordered two of the covers. The covers were here in 5 days. Amazon sells these directly and currently they state that their inventory is low, down to 16 covers and that they have ordered more. I'd love to know if TBN member orders have had anything to do with the sudden demand?

I think around here the VFDs use pond water quite often to battle grass fires and structural fires if no other source is available. I would hate to think that they would have to wait on the speed of a person's well pump or travel over 10 miles to get water when a pond is handy. When I had my well drilled, they pumped water out of my pond for that and I suspect the well driller's pumps are as prone to damage as any the FDs would have.

I've used the Walmart.com Ship to Store for Pickup a few times with never a problem so far. Some were for me to pickup here at our local store, but earlier this year, I ordered a sewing machine for my wife's sister to pick up at a Walmart in West Virginia. In fact, we were notified that it was ready for pickup several days earlier than they first said.

Here's a photo to add to the deer photos in this thread. My neighbor took this shot of twin fawns and sent it to us today. I think there are still plenty of acorns in the woods from last year, but this year's crop will be tiny. By winter time, deer will be coming to people's feeders in herds. That's my theory anyhow.:laughing:
