Texas Heat!

Dennis, I'll bet a day never goes by that the tour guide isn't asked for free samples. But I do wonder what their stock answer is.

Not only do they not give free samples, but they had high security on the demo bills from the spider press they have on display. They were making a bill using an old plate from the 1800s and printing only on one side of the paper. When the demo was done, the person showed the bill to everyone and would allow you to touch it, but he held onto it. He would not let you hold it in your hand. He said each night before he went home, he had to account for each bill he recorded in his press log. Then, he'd shred the sample bills and put them in the burn bin.

Most tour guides will volunteer that there are no free samples at the beginning of the tour. But, if someone asks, they say that no free samples will be given, but shredded bills can be purchased in the gift shop. Unserialized sheets can also be purchased, but they are very expensive, around $250. You pay more for the sheets than the face value of all the notes on the sheet.

BTW: If you go for the tour, you first park in the visitor's parking lot and go through a security checkpoint. No cellphones or cameras are allowed. It's best if ladies leave purses in your locked car. You have to go through a metal detector also, so you have to empty your pockets of change, watches, keys, etc. and put them in a tray. Being the bonehead I am, I forgot that I had suspenders on over my t-shirt but under my outer shirt. I set off the metal detector big time and had to be hand wanded by one of the guards.:ashamed: My wife and granddaughter got a big laugh at that. After the security check, they load you onto a very nice bus and take you into the inner security area and to the front door of the tour entrance. Once inside, they have escalators up to the 2nd floor tour area above the work areas and the theater for the video presentation. As the tour guide takes you from place-to-place, they wear a wireless headset that transmits to an amplifier and speakers in the hallway above the group so that you easily hear the guide's presentation. It's really a well thought-out tour.

. . . and to keep on topic, the bus you ride on is air conditioned to compensate for the Texas heat.

Jim, I think you may have just talked me out of going for that tour; too much trouble.

Well that's up to you, but can you visualize what a pleasure it is to be in a place where no goofball ringtones are going off or people yackin' loudly or texting and stumbling around? Not one bright flash nor one cellphone call did I have to tolerate. What a breath of fresh air. I think I'll go back for the tour everytime I need a break from cellphone mania.:D

I just take a walk in the woods w/o a phone.
Your right though. It appears people can't buy a roll of toilet paper anymore
without talking to someone on their cell phone about it!

Must have just heard me on the phone!

Well, as you locals know, we are supposed to hit near 110* .Mostly the counties West of DFW. In any respect the metro will be 106+ through the week.

Watering the yard has become a "daily" chore for me. I have made up my mind on a sprinkler system by next summer, the time to put it in will pale compared to babysitting the grass/sprinklers in the immediate area of the house. I bet half the water put out from 6am-8pm is a waste, just barely keeps it green, but doesn't soak. I need the roots to go deep so I like deep watering rather than the "triage" I have been doing.

Seems the more I water the Boss's flower beds, the more varmints I attract, moles are becoming and issue, but it is so dry you can't see the tunnels very good. Armadillos ravaged one bed, so I see some evening guard duty.

Gotta love it!!

Dennis, I've tried everything but professional exterminators with no luck at all in getting rid of the moles.

Bird, my daughter had a cat named "Simone", that dude was a mole catching machine. Problem with him is, he would only play with them and let them go, sorta like "catch and release". So instead of looking for moles I had to watch the cat! Baby rabbits and bird's, he'd kill.

Ever been lost and hungry enough to eat a mole?
They claim they are awefull bitter tasting is the reason cat's won't eat them.
Our cat won't eat them either but he rolls in horse apples.

Sorry folks, but I stole your rain. First real rain 1/2+ since Jan. Had 2 or 3 damps, that be if you looked soon enough something would be damp. And 2, 2/10" sprinkles. Maybe this month will get some real rains.

Now on the 100+ day for over 100 & some odd days.

Tucson weather does not count out here 25 miles west. Almost always hotter here and the last 2 or 3 years most of the rain has been way east of here.

It's 105 here right now; forecast for 110 tomorrow. And you see what happens when you steal my rain. The first picture is my St. Augustine in the back yard, and I've been watering it a bit; pretty sad. But then the second picture is the back yard next door. They have not watered. One tree has already shed lots of its leaves.

I just got the following e-mail from a cousin in Texas:

It's so hot here my rock garden is dying. My pet rock (remember those?) came in and just laid there. Poor thing, I had to pick him up with a pot holder to put him in the freezer. He was so hot he thawed all the meat and defrosted the freezer, but I think he will make it.

Sorry (not really ) stealing your rain.

Had quite a few of those 110's this year. Most of the time humidity is close to 0, now up in the 50 / 60%.

Some of the real old native trees are giving up. I've got some in the yard that have needed water. Even some cactus are wilting.

Waiting for A-Gore to return my call. Am sure he has a cure.:D:laughing:

My coworker just got back from Las Vegas last week. He said, "It was 108 and low humidity and we could just walk around for miles and not even sweat, but when we landed in Houston and got off the plane, it was like getting hit in the face with a hot sauna blow dryer."

Best one so far from Bird, what was it? "So hot the mesquites are carrying canteens"

109 here today, leaves falling like it's October.

Bird, it's easy to see the stress of your SA grass, but your neighbor will likely lose all of his grass and have a weed patch next year. With yours, as soon as it rains, it will turn lush and green almost overnight. It's amazing how quickly SA grass perks up if you just water it enough for it to survive.

Pacerron: I was in our local Lowe's yesterday and bought a couple of sprinklers for my aerobic septic system. They had a whole box full of the Rainbird P5-R sprinklers for $6.17 each. With my 10% military discount, that's $5.55 each. Amazon wants $9.53 for that exact same sprinkler head.
