My DOA mailbox has been replace by a breakaway steel mailbox thanks to Harvey's suggestion. I stole Harvey from Mike for a bit during the gate project to construct the break-away pole. Thanks Harvey and Mike.

Great idea! I only put my cedar post into the ground about a foot deep in case some mama is having to slap a child in the backseat for acting up whilst she's driving down our road.

I don't want to hurt anybody who accidentally hits it.

I guess you've been exposed to some of my rants about killer mailboxes. Don's is heavy but it will shear off when hit, just like those signs on the highway and similar to what happens to a fire hydrant.

I don't have any pictures, but my wife's brother had a bit of an unusual mailbox down in Navarro County. He set the post very solid, but across the borrow ditch from the edge of the road. Then mounted the box on a long pivot, so it stuck out over the ditch to the normal distance from the edge of the road. If the box got hit, it just swung in an arc over the ditch and could be easily pulled back into the proper position.

Picked roughly a bushel of dried black eyed peas from the garden. My kids helped for about an hour shelling. I wish I had an pea shelling machine. the $45 dollar model kind of looks slow and some have reviewed it that the rollers go south easily. Has anyone used one lately? Says you can hook a kitchen mixer to it or spin it manually. I think even the low speed on our cheap mixer would be too fast.

Ended up with a large cookie pan brim full of shelled peas.

Anyway, pulled some frozen ham out and going to cook some black eyed peas with it today. :)

Dried black eyed peas? Lots of different tastes and preferences with black eyed peas. I have a younger brother who, along with his wife, prefers dried black eyed peas. And when I had a garden, I had friend who wanted the fresher ones, but fully developed, larger peas. Personally, I like any of them, but my preference is for young tender ones, including a few snaps. So I cannot find my preferred peas in the grocery store. Even the canned ones with snaps are made from fully matured peas; good, just not the best, in my opinion. So since I can't find the ones I prefer, lately I've been buying very young fresh purple hull peas at the local farmers market; $5 for 12 oz. already shelled. Not cheap, but they sure are tasty.

I too prefer to have them a little more tender, with snaps. I guess that I am lucky, because I don't mind sitting on the front porch, with a cold beer in the evenings, and shelling them myself. I put several bags of them in the freezer, and eat a lot of them too, when they are coming in nicely.

Been picking squash, okra, tomatoes and the like. Garden, yard and pastures keep me busy when I am home, with the rain from a couple of weeks ago. I am not home much though. Been spending an awful lot of time at airports and in the air!! Even been considering taking one of the flying jobs offered to me! (Like I am not already stretched enough!!!) But the thought of getting paid to have so much fun is very tempting!! Not sure if my boss will allow me the flexible hours for a second job, but I might ask for them.

Have another pilot that I meet up with at the airport, and we get airborne, every chance we get. No telling which airport we will go to next, we usually decide when we are doing the pre-flight. Sometimes we take just his airplane, sometimes we take 2! Nothing like a little formation flying along the way!

Anyway, while they are not real pretty, here are a few of what I picked to have on burgers thrown on the grill for the holiday weekend. I took some to the others that hang around airports, so they could have the taste of summer while they travel cross country. And my zucchini bread is always a hit, because it packs so nicely for carrying on the next leg, and is quite tasty!

Y'all have a great weekend!

My 'maters weren't beauty queens either. I have about 5 or more mockingbirds feasting on them....Arrrghhh. Need a pet falcon.
