Dried black eyed peas? Lots of different tastes and preferences with black eyed peas. I have a younger brother who, along with his wife, prefers dried black eyed peas. And when I had a garden, I had friend who wanted the fresher ones, but fully developed, larger peas. Personally, I like any of them, but my preference is for young tender ones, including a few snaps. So I cannot find my preferred peas in the grocery store. Even the canned ones with snaps are made from fully matured peas; good, just not the best, in my opinion. So since I can't find the ones I prefer, lately I've been buying very young fresh purple hull peas at the local farmers market; $5 for 12 oz. already shelled. Not cheap, but they sure are tasty.

Bird- I'm with you I'll take BEP's anyway but I like fresh best. My Grandmother always cut up a few New Potatoes and cooked them with the peas.......some hot cornbread, green onions and maybe some sliced tomatoes and that was a meal.

Found this old recipe I thought I'd throw in for the discussion:

CHARLIE’S BLACKEYED PEA SOUP
This is a great soup for New Years Day. In Texas we always eat Blackeyed peas on New Years Day for Good Luck, and this soup is a great for the day after the celebration and to eat at half time of the football games. It’s best served with cornbread or crusty Italian bread with green onions on the side.

1# BLACKEYED PEAS- clean and soak overnight

WATER- Drain old water and cover with new water plus 1 inch

ONIONS-1 med. chopped
BACON- 4 slices of Peppered Bacon cut into 1 inch pieces
Or Smoke Brautwurst Sausage – 6 oz. Sausage split in half and sliced into half moons

POTATOES- 2 med. Peeled and cubed

CARROTS- 1 Lg.-Diced small

CELERY- 2 stalks- diced small

BLACK PEPPER- 1tsp.

GRANULATED GARLIC- 1 Tbs.

SALT TO TASTE

DIRECTIONS:
SOAK PEAS OVERNIGHT & DRAIN

ADD NEW WATER, ONIONS, & SAUSAGE OR BACON – AND COOK FOR AN HOUR

ADD POTATOES, CARROTS, AND CELERY – AND COOK ANOTHER 45 MINUTES ARE UNTIL VEGETABLES ARE DONE

ADD WATER IF NECESSARY TO GIVE THE SOUP THE PROPER THICKNESS.

Secret—You can substitute pinto beans for the blackeyed peas for another version of this soup.

So ... I spend all day cutting hay and come home to SAUERKRAUT PIZZA .. I've got a suspicious feeling Cher has been in the Marquita's ... The glass ... The mix ... The tequila ... The lime .. The salt ... Oh life is good!!!

Dang!! Making me hungry and thirsty, and it is Monday morning. I'll bet that meal and refreshment was PERFECT after a day in the field! I think it would be prefect almost any day!

Hey Jim, look at the new way to control the hogs. Feed them the same preservative used in bacon!
Any problem with eating a poisoned hog? They will already have the bacon flavoring.

I heard about this too. While I'm overrun with hogs, I do like to process a few of the small ones to eat. What concerns me is what if someone nearby poison them and ends up on my dinner table.
