I would gear down with the gasser and carry on and apply the same torque to the drive wheels.
The mileage is no advantage given the extra price of fuel and service to a post 2011 EPA diesel.
Actually the real fuel economy advantage of the diesel is because you dont have downshift and cruise in a lower gear all the time, just to catch the few times you need the torque... A gas engine is at a big disadvantage at low load and high rpm because it sucks a vacuum on the throttle valve but exhausts against atmospheric pressure, which is a big energy loss. EcoBoost is a smaller engine that can deliver lighter loads with less throttle vacuum, and the turbo kicks in when torque is required... The whole idea behind ecoboost is to reduce throttle vacuum losses :)

....and kill your top end cruising at the same time...why not the best of both worlds? Not to mention the advantages of towing.

That is what six speed transmissions are for. Low first and overdrive top gear.

DI engines with variable cam timing run very little intake manifold vacuum. Pumping losses are gone.

So are you saying that your overdrive top gear won't be affected when you install lower gearing??? And that your top end cruising won't be affected?

Why install lower gearing when 1st gears are now deep reduction plus the low speed transfer case 4WD position?
Rock climbing is a very small and obscure niche market . Climbers are custom built machines instead of daily driver so who cares about highway mileage?

You forgot to answer my question :)

You obviously do not live near Rubicon... :D

What is a "Rubicon" ?
The Rubicon (Latin: Rubico, Italian: Rubicone) is a shallow river in northeastern Italy, about 80 kilometres long, running from the Apennine Mountains to the Adriatic Sea through the southern Emilia-Romagna region, between the towns of Rimini and Cesena. The Latin word rubico comes from the adjective "rubeus", meaning "red". The river was so named because its waters are colored red by mud deposits. It was key to protecting Rome from civil war.
The idiom "Crossing the Rubicon" means to pass a point of no return, and refers to Julius Caesar's army's crossing of the river in 49 BC, which was considered an act of insurrection. Because the course of the river has changed much since then, it is impossible to confirm exactly where the Rubicon flowed when Caesar and his legions crossed it, even though most evidence links it to the river officially so named. The river is perhaps most known as the place where Julius Caesar uttered the famous phrase "alea iacta est" – the die is cast.

Jeep makes a "Rubicon" package for the Wrangler. It is the ultimate factory off-roader. The package includes Rock sliders, front and rear Dana 44 axles, locking front and rear differential's, 4:10 gears, front sway bar disconnect, BFG M/T tires, and 4:1 low gear ratio T-case.

I do not mean any disrespect whatsoever, but this statement explains a lot of your skepticism.

Let's hope we find something out at the Detroit auto show, regarding the diesel option.
