The age old.."what's the best land clearing technique" question again

And just how do you find a place that rents these? Google only comes up with the same 10 rental places, and none of them have a mulcher and are out of state anyways.

I was not suggesting that you rent a machine or do it yourself but to have the work done for you by a pro like I did. You should be able to find someone who will quote the job and do it for that price. I would never hire anyone by the hour to do work like that but for a fixed price only with no surprises at the end. I was so happy with the results I tipped the crew but not the owner. It only took them a couple of days but they had to wait for a little rain as it was too dry when they started. It really gets the job done, no muss, no fuss, over and onto what's next.

Because of the mulch, I think I have several trees standing today while others around have recently lost trees to bark beetle and the drought. That's money saved as taking out trees is never easy and it always costs something.

So we're up to 42 posts talking back and forth amongst ourselves and have now repeated most (vastly differing) opinions several times. Has Iguezz checked back in?

p.s. Nope. I checked. Guess Iguezz was not really so interested in our collective wisdom. Or maybe was put off by our vastly differing opinions?

He may never check back in, it happens all the time. However, years from now someone may do a search for this exact same thing, and hopefully will at least learn of different options and be slightly more educated than they were before searching.

It's still a good discussion regardless. Let's keep it going!

True they have not posted.
From their log activity they were last on-line on the 8th in the mid morning two days after their first post on the topic. They may very well have checked in and read the replies but if they know nothing on the subject why would they post? They read the new information presented and go on. I have posted questions in the past and waited for answers but since I have had nothing to add to the question that I posted about why would I post unless to merely say "thanks for the replies keep them coming"?

Some folks post just to post others only post if they have something to really add. I often am not able to go online to TBN daily. Even when I read I may not post. My statistics show I post 0.36 posts per day. I know some on here that show an average post count of over 10 post per day. That is an average so they are very prolific, not everyone is. Piston is 3 times as prolific as you, JRobyn and I am, that is his way you and I have our way. Each to their own.

I agree with Piston it is a good discussion.

Myself I always cut big trees up 5'. Work around them if they are too stiff then come back later after a big rain to push them right over. Now that leaves one bigass divot you need to fill and it's done. I did a lot of them with a wimpy D4 7U cat years back. It sure does suck when you roll into that huge hole where the root ball came out. It is so much easier though when the ground is soft after a rain though .

Yes, but stump-holes are part of the game ..... filling them in is just another job in clearing land. ;)
Try to avoid scraping only top-soil into them if it is thin, like our land - put a couple of buckets of fill into the hole first, tramp it down (with the machine you're using) and then cover it with some top-soil - to a level which is a little (6-8ins, more for deeper holes) higher than the surrounding surface. I reckon in the next year or so it will settle down to around the correct level. It is easy to then add a little more if it's a bit lower. It should then be thin enough for the grass to easily grow up through it.

I found some pictures of part of the clearing job I did with just my FEL and a box blade. You can see what it looked like on either side of the cleared area. Most 4-6 inch trees at the base. A few 8-10.

This is what it looked like a few years ago. Now the upper part just looks like lawn.

N80, that looks great. It's amazing what one can do with a little tractor like ours.

It's hard to tell. If he uses someone elses computer and doesn't sign in then it will not log him as being here.
