I go to TSC today, start putting things together to run from the rear remotes to the front of the FEL ...

Had to splice a 120" to a 96" to get 18' needed 2 of them ... also needed (2) 72" to put on the cylinder on the hay grapple as well as 2 females and 4 male QD's ... well 3/8" here and 1/2 there and nipples and fittings a conglomeration that was looking pretty patched together and in my head its running around $150 bucks ... I SAYS forget this I'm going to the auto parts store and have them make these.

So I ordered 2- 18' 3/8 hose ... 2-6' 3/8 hose .. no splices, right sized fittings on the end just to screw the male and female QD's straight on .. no adaptors or fittings ... nice looking put together right.

I picked them up this afternoon ... I about died when he handed me the bill$357.78 ... I should have asked before hand.

Well, you could have gotten 1/4" hose to save some money, or you could have made your own;)

Well Kenny I don't think I could have made my own. I was shopping the 3/8 at TSC and ya know when a couple hose's added together run 50 bucks x 2 or 100 and then the misc adds up and in your mind your thinking the $150 or so ... never dawned on me that when I asked for the 3/8 and all the stuff... well I quess it was sticker shock!!

But darn they are nice and I am proud of them!!

I have always stressed the point about getting estimates on hyd hose make up. You should always ask for options before they make up the hose. That would be the time to give the go ahead on the build, knowing what the outcome will be. I think, just about everyone has experienced this shock at one time of another.

The hose guys will only say, well, you wanted a hose and we made it, so now pay up.

When I asked ...are you sure about that ...he says yep and I said TSC and he said well they use the cheap stuff. I've never backed up, I ordered it and I paid!! But let me tell you I got excatly what I told him I wanted!!!

That's not that bad. 48' of 3/8" hose and 8 hose ends, plus the time to assemble them. I probably would have charged about $300 for the same thing and I am considerably cheaper than most places around here.

I paid $85 for a 30" and a 36" with swivel ends (which I didn't need) but I was able to finish my install... I had no problem paying the bill to the local shop  Compared to buying online 4x 7' hoses for just a little bit more...

I hear what you're saying Blueriver.....It is expensive to get custom hoses made, but what's the alternative.....a bunch of adapters, hoses too long, cheaper hose material ( 1 wire braid) ect....At least you have a nice job to show for it...........

I've seen a few hose jobs on this website that needed a little help with custom hoses ......

I really lucked out when I had the hydraulics hooked up for my grapple. The local Cenex station does custom hoses, so I went there expecting to drop off the tractor and pick it up when it's done. Bill, the hose guy, told me to stick around and give him a hand. I obliged, and when everything was done, he only charged me for the parts. I was a little shocked (pleasantly, of course) by the omission of the labor, when Bill said, "You did all the work."

Gotta love small towns!

I provide the hoses n fittings and take them to the cannery and have one of the mechanics crimp them for me. For a few crab, get all my hoses made up for me.

Yep ... it appears as though the parts from them would have been $154 plus S&H ... and per Kennyd's thread it appears to be something I could have made.

Thank you ....

I get all my stuff done at Discount Hydraulic Hose.com

So much cheaper. I need 2 18' hoses last year for my snow plow and locally they wanted $300. I got it for just over $125 from them. I just got a order yesterday with special Komatsu ends made for $120 for 4 hoses. My local guy was $220.

You just order what you need to make the hoses then they charge a $10 per hose assembly fee. Example: 12' of 3/8" hose and 4 fittings Part #58320985, and 4 fittings part #7gt777745

During the checkout process there is a section where you can put your specs. Something like "Please make 4 hoses each 3' long using one fitting 58420885 on one end and one fitting 7gt777745 on the other end. If you have any questions please call me at the phone number in my profile".

That easy.

The is a lot of diversity in the hose and fitting market, from non-named China imported hose to brand name hose and fittings. Although the truth is almost all the hose is made in Asia there is a noticeable quality difference in brands still, along with price differences; make sure you are comparing the same items.

The cost of parts of what you described is probably about $100 (Parker brand) which doesn't include the quick disconnects, depending on the style can range greatly. We tend to use a lot of flat faced which cost us nearly $60/set but many types are less than $20/set.

Reusuable fittings are an option for small quantities of hose that need to be made up on the spot or run through tight areas and finished off on the machine. Keep in mind they tend to cost nearly twice as much as one piece crimp fittings and on short hoses are more expensive than crimps.

I guess I should say that all the hoses I have received from the company I listed above are from Eaton. I have place 3 orders since 2006 and all have saved me quite a bit of money and been top quality.
