The death of an L3901

Most times winching I have it on idle and dont see a stump or rock that the trees catch on and I dont release the rope fast enough or I think the tree will come and then it dont. Sometimes I have throttle up and I break the cable, I just didn't know a motor can run backwards but this dont happen very often, so far in 14 years about 3 times.
I have seen a couple truck motors run backwards from stalling out..

Herea a video last spring of winching, throttle was up and trees caught on stump, if throttle was on idle it would stall the tractor and or make it run backwards if rope not release at the right time, or if I kept trying to winch with trees caught on stump with throttle up I would break the cable, that was a mud hole back in April.

That happened to me in a Euclid dump truck back in the late 60's when I was working in the quarry. It blew the oil out of the oil bath air cleaner and onto the fender. They had virtually no brakes when loaded. I don't know if that was the nature of the beast in those days or if the quarry thought kids were expendable.

RULE#1 was to never take it out of gear on a grade. RULE#1A should have been go with at least one gear lower than you think you need:)

Shouldn’t winch clutch slip before cable breaks? You definitely get more pulling power if it doesn’t slip.....just be quick to duck when snaps.
What is the ratcheting noise when your winching? Are you the fellow who rigged it up so you only need one winch operating rope? Brake goes on as soon as you stop pulling?
.....but if that was the case, I guess cable couldn’t turn engine backwards?

Most times the clutch dont slip when I have the rope pulled tight and now thats easier to do after I put a handle on the pull rope. Every time I broke the 5/16 cable it just lays there, and the ratchet sound is a flat piece of steel riding on the spool, locks in when the drum stops turning, might be the most simple design on a pto winch.

The step which OldPath left out when running backward is that while still holding the winch clutch engaged, the tree will roll back off the stump, turning the clutch hence the engine backward. And since Kubotas just want to run, spinning it backward starts the engine. The oil pump doesn't really like it when that happens though.
It happened to me several times with my old 275, and my neighbor says it's also happened on his 235 Timberjack skidder.
