Message for the guy that said that a bucket with a guy in it is safer than say a load of bananas or dirt or some thing as the loader should handle it ok . You would think so but there is allways the unforseen factor. A friend of mie has a cat loader and just recently got the moter runnimg. To test every thing he loaded several trucks with gravel--- no problems. As he explaned it the old biddies at the museum in town wanted the branches cut of a large tree high up in the air. He climbed into the huge bucket with a running chainsaw and got his brother inlaw to lift him up. WWWWWWHHHAY up in tha air . His weight in the bucket added about as much weight as a fly on a flyswat. His brother in law lifted him right up to the cylanders hit the ed of the stroke and then probably held the lever as he was gasing up and out the window. This put a much heavier load on the hy than any load in the bucket. Of coure you know a hy line bust and down came man and running chainsaw. Soon the brother in law was running . All in all no body was injured very bad but the musium got a coat of hy oil. Like some body said that bucket didnt come down really fast but that was cold oil and may have been a lot faster with hot oil. You can allways figure out every thing in advance but there is allways the dum *** factor!

Heights don't bother me, it's the fear of falling with the resulting pain at the bottom that does scare me.

Great idea! And a great lookin' piece of work! (The pole barn is a fine lookin' project, too.)

Gonna have to copy that for my forks. Just had my youngest son in the bucket hanging some bird houses --- and he wasn't real tickled to be screwin' in wood screws at 12' in the air, either.

Just finished a set of quick tach forks for the loader. I want to price out some steel for a man lift. I figure it will be 40" x 6' x 4' high. I want to be able to bolt sections together so it can be stored in doors in a small contained area. 2" square tubing will be the major component.

yea I'm the guy but I never said anything about it being safer than the load of bananas I just said the load of bananas probably fell faster because of the extreme weight of them. I wasnt using any fancy math formula to figure it out only what seemed logical to me. I have only witnessed people falling off ladders not any buckets so I cant say for sure who falls faster but when they fall off a ladder they come down pretty quick. However I will say for me personally I would rather be in the basket any day over balancing on a ladder no matter what I was doing. The guy could have fallen off a ladder with the chainsaw as well whether or not he would have been better off well never know.

As we can all agree is that it isnt the fall that hurts its that dang sudden stop! how many times have we all climbed up a ladder with not another sole in sight, if we would have fell no one would even know if we were hurt.....I guess when I built this I had safety in mind..... because if something goes wrong, and I pray it doesnt, you have someone there to help because there is someone there running the tractor for whomever is in the basket. Of course im joking, but there is a little truth to it.

I have just completed Phase 2 of my pole barn I added 2 12' Lean to's to each side of the barn! Its shaping up real nice, and this lift has made it so nice, granted I had to do some ladder work, but all in all I felt alot better working out of the basket, My best friend and I take turns in the basket, but we always make sure before we work that all hands are off of any controls, until the person in the basket is ready to move to the next location.

I will try to post pictures of phase 2 on the barn build this weekend

Thanks for all the comments on my man lift, If anyone has ever wanted to build one please do...Its super simple and I am by not means a fabricator, but just keep safety in mind when building it. Anything you can do upfront could help later on!

Im about ready to build something else...now that the barn is almost complete! Any Ideas????

I built a wife lift too. Then a few years later I figured out that it could reach two feet higher with a simple design change. So attached is the result. Note: when it is acutally being used, there is plenty of ballast on the back of the tractor. I can reach to 18 feet now, pretty good for a loader that only reaches six feet high by itself. Notice the small grey rubber (non-marking) wheels on there. The final version has four wheels, two at the cage floor level, and two mounted at the corners of the cage railing. When the loader settles slowly, the wheels keep the cage from marking the building you are working next to. There is a 2.5 inch raised lip all around the floor edge for safety, and it keeps handtools from rolling out too. Now, if only I had a self-leveling loader...
