Measured the 91 inch circumference right below the branches. Tree has been dead for about a year, the bark is starting to fall off.

Extended the boom, breaking the roots.

Lifted and pushed it back, then knocked off as much dirt as possible.

Found the balance point and took it to the burn pile, on the stump bucket.

That shot from behind where you found the balance point reminds me of an ant hauling off a dead grasshopper.... something 5 times its size.

Looks like fun!

Impressive balancing skills indeed. I would have been tempted to go get the grapple back on after digging up the roots.

I guess a narrow, no lid grapple did the trick here! :D

I'm seeing 6-7 cuts with the chainsaw and just as many trips with my little PT425. :D

And the stump would have stayed where it was, too!

Yep, took three attempts to balance it. I started too far away from the root ball.

I have carried a lot of smaller trees on the stump bucket and never had one fall off. It helps that the front axle is bolted to the frame and the rear axle pivots.

Even with the narrow 44" grapple, I balance the tree and leave the lid open.

Update to the the burn pile started last year in this thread. Have been adding to it since then, this is the last grapple full, two days ago:

The Wind Alert Website forecasts low wind for a few days, so went out this morning at 9:55 with some old diesel to light it off.

11:43, burning slow:

12:45, not much flame visible:

12:55, put the Fire Poker (stump bucket), on the V417 to get the fire blazing again:

3:05, needs more poking:

3:21, slow burning again, pushed together one last time after this picture:

6:45, still some visible flame:

Pushing the tree seems easy - not getting hit by the top coming back at you has hurt a few.

I don't have to worry about the top hitting me if it breaks off, because the push point is so far forward and the cab is FOP rated.

Makes me wanna go out and buy a telehandler!

Why do you remove your grapple to work the fire after it gets going? I like to pick them up and restack them as they burn with my grapple.

I don't want the grapple hoses that close to the heat and flames.

Here is what is left this morning, still have some visible flame on the root.

Using a grapple would not have done any better than the stump bucket did:
