In 1976 or 77 I was working as a student officer at Southeastern Louisiana University Police Dept. One of the full time guys, an older gentlemen was working on an old boat. He asked me if I would be interested in a couple of old bronze portholes that he had removed, and of course I said "yes". So, he gave me 2 Wilcox-Crittenden(now out of business) 8"-ers and each one had a crack in the glass from a bb gun. I thought they were the coolest thing, and told him that "someday when I build my house one of these is going in the front door."

I took them apart back then, cleaned them up and ordered new glass and gaskets. They sat in a box and got moved to TX, then FL where I gave one of them to a buddy. Then the remaining one made the move to TN when it finally saw the day light again today(36 years later). Anyway, it fits our eclectic tastes very well, and my wife spent a few years working on a yacht in the carribbean(Douglas MacArthur's old 120' wooden hull motor yacht built in 1929), so both of us have a soft spot for it.

So there you have it.................:thumbsup::laughing:

Great story and reason for the porthole in your door. I like it!!!

The door looks great.. The porthole is a cool touch. Have you decided on the lockset and handles?

Did you get any of the hail yesterday? Chattanooga got baseball size hail with tornadoes and I heard a tornado hit Lee Co, Va pretty hard. Two years in a row is too much.

I decided on a rim lock set, just have not decided which one yet:

Nope, we lucked out again...all the real nasty stuff skirted us on both sides. We did put Les's Sorento in the garage of the log house...don't need another $5,500 in hail damage:mad:

I will say this...NO matter who the big bad wolf is ...he can huff and puff but he is not going to blow your house down...Really coming together nice...You should be real proud...I love the door...

We got some quarter sized hail last night but seemed to miss significant damage. One car got 4 little dents. According to the weather service, a tornado passed right over our neighborhood but I haven't heard that it touched down. Knoxville, as as you know, got hit hard with hail last spring. I heard 200,000 houses got or are getting new roofs. We're all tired of hail and tornadoes.

Thanks Brin,Eddie & Shane!

I got the 4 side light windows in(either side of the french doors) installed, no problem:thumbsup:.

I also noticed that the used 8" Class A flue pipe was leaking water down onto/into the stove. It came with a Windbeater flue cap(the Class A was all used off craigslist) and when I installed the cap I noticed that it had no skirt to keep water out of the pipe and or the double wall w/insulation. I em'd the seller & they said they never had a problem......but their install was 90 degrees out thru a wall, then 90 degrees up on an exterior wall, so water would have just run down the pipe onto the ground and not make a 90 degree turn. Anyway, I ran down the skirt which is called a "Storm Collar" and got the only one that the distributor said he "found up in the rafters of the warehouse"(wheeeew) and it is on the way. I fired up the stove today, 50 degrees out with a little wind and it drafted great, so I may not need another 4' of flue pipe. It is getting colder tomorrow w/possible snow, so I am going to get the stove humming and see how it performs.

All in all a good day..and the sun graced us with it's presence
too:thumbsup:

Obed, yes last spring is what nailed Les's Sorento. Lately it feels like we live in S. Dakota with all the violent weather.........

I love the port hole. The story behind it just makes it that much more interesting.

I was onsite yesterday morning and scoped out the new door. Its seriously heavy duty and feels like a bank safe door. Great job.:thumbsup:

M7, WOW. I've been busy for awhile and just now got caught up. Beautiful door!!!! Nice job. And I love the port hole. You'll be able to sit in your easy chair and watch as I get started on my building project. :laughing:

I just ordered some logs - average 22" diameter, so I won't be lifting any of those bad boys by hand.

Keep up the expert work. I've got pages of notes from your post. Thanks!

22" logs...wow that's gonna be a "Lodge" not a cabin;)

I'm putting all the stops in for the gable glass. I am using leftover Hemlock slabs and making 1.5"x1.5" stops. I have made two trips down to the mill because I used up the first batch on the side light windows....it sure takes way more than you think.

Then I was trimming out a side light and ran a 3 " screw into the edge of the glass....a $100 mistake...{sigh}
