Instead of piling on to the music thread or a bunch of individual threads, this can be the thread for all passings of celebrities, entertainers or other people of note.

Since we're doing historical stuff (which wasn't really the intent), a guy named Abe made a fateful trip to Ford's Theater on April 14, surviving until the 15th.

My apologies. I am a history buff and as a relatively new guy here, just trying to add content to an interesting to me forum. The passing of celebrities is often intertwined with historical events of their day. I suspect many of us here remember well hearing of or reading about some of these events.

Not to digress too far, that would be no. Federal income tax was passed by Congress in 1909 with the passage of the 16th Amendment. It was ratified in February 1913. There were some income taxes prior to that but those were temporary and only for specific purposes.

He signed it into law in 1862 (modifying an 1861 version) which created the forerunner to the IRS:

I believe the ones who lose in a Ponzi scheme are those who pay in expecting to get a return but never get their money back.

Not those who actually get the money. So accepting the money is ok.

The victims are those still standing once the scheme falls apart.

I’m not saying FICA is a Ponzi scheme. But - the way it is financed would never be acceptable/legal in private pensions.

Actually, i qualified for food stamps in oregon for 6-7 years and lots of other ssi income/benies that in fact, i did turn down.....or didn't apply for.

The commercials urging people to get the benefits THEY DESERVE make me ill. And i watch little commercial tv.

As far as social security, i'd turn that down if i could only get on the federal employees pension plan because, i'm sure they really deserve it.

My step grandfather worked until the last year of his life and passed at 88.

He was the first in at his Union Tool and Die shop and last out... Every Saturday morning he went in to lay out next week's work...

Never accepted a penny of Social Security... said America had given him opportunities he could never have imagined growing up as Tool.Maker from humble background in Germany...

There is a mechanism to refuse and read somewhere over a hundred thousand do so...

Quite a guy but absolute when it came to how things were to be done...

Remember a new hire reckless with forklift... didn't last the morning and Union or not he was gone...
