I built a 18'x20' one myself, forget the manufacturer.

I made a second floor inside by putting 4x4's into the indented parts of the panels (cut with a couple of angles to fit snugly) then got some 2/12 manufactured joists to run from one 4x4 to the other side. Then covered that on top with 4x8' sheets of tongue in goove panels.

I looked around and that composite joist type stuff is the only thing for long unsupprted runs.

I've considered building one of these kits to do the shop/apartment gig as well - and like the solutions you came up with. (I've also looked at the pole barn style of construction, too - still undecided which I like better)

will definitely look forward to pictures of the log house as it goes up.
what does a woodbug chainsaw mill look like? is it similar to the Gransberg mills?

I have enjoyed the construction of the steel master building. I have a steel master 30x40 A type building...been sitting in storage for about 8 years. Guess I will have to get it up...your project looks great! I am thinking of putting mine up on a 2-3 foot block wall, to accomadate some taller equipment.

Dog,I think we are going to wedge an electric fire place in there someplace. Originally i wanted a wood stove, but we decided against it. The space is so small, it would be hard to regulate the temp with wood.

Erik,Yep, similar to a Granberg. Try woodbug.com (no www.) They seem to be outa business but the web site is still there to give you an idea.

Lev, i wish i had gone 2' taller, the loft is a little low for me @ 6'4". I have seen a few on footers & it looks fine.

Psj, i was gonna do it myself, but a local guy did it for the same price($1,200). It's about 2 inches thick & is rated around an R-17. The difference it made was amazing. I wish i could afford to do the shop side, but that will have to wait.
