Does anybody know the theft rate on tractors? I have heard of it happening, but I have never met anybody that has had it happen. I heard of more tractors catching fire than being stolen.

I work for a GC, and theft rate of heavy equipment and tractors is.. well.. something big enough to worry about.. small items walk faster.. like gennies and pressure washers, and stuff you can lift out of pickup truck beds.. but machines do get stolen. had 2 tractors down the road come up missing a month ago...

1, I didn't see where this was solely limited to machines stored at ones house.. but also for machines stored at area you won't be there to watch over them.
Is there much difference in a farm off the main road.. or a construction site off the main road.. does a construction site confer any magical protection? if it does. then you'll need to explain that to all the builders that get copper and appliances stole out of their homes as they build them.
Plenty of tractors set at construction sites.
sounds like it applies pretty good to me...

Loss statistics would prove it.
On a construction site you know equipment is there and people are or not working. Just because a place looks like a farm house doesn't mean that there is anything risking your life over. Rent a cop maybe on a construction site or a guy with a rifle that really doesn't want you messing with his equipment.
Also, how much of the theft from construction sites is done by the people that work there? I bet it is higher than most would like to admit.

Most crime is committed by someone you've had previous contact with. Not a true stranger in most cases. Can't count the number of times I've heard of a home break in being traced back to someone who worked on their house or cleaned their pool etc even a few years back.....imagine the same holds true for tractor theft, which brings me back to a previous statement I've made, if they don't know you have it they can't steal it. My tractor and other goodies stay hidden as much as possible...I'm not out to impress anyone with my stuff.

The best way to make a tractor theft proof is to use an acetylene torch to cut it into tiny chunks which you can bury under trees throughout the property. Of course, if you need to use it again I hope you're good at jigsaw puzzles...
I've been using a tent-like instant garage on my property and have had good luck. At least it requires effort to go up and figure out if it's something worth stealing or just a tractor of a different color. Add to that any of the locking mechanisms above and a solar powered "camera" that's not much more than a shell with a blinking LED attached to a big old "antenna" and you've probably got a decent deterrent. However, if someone really wants your tractor they'll get it no matter what.
