If you can not determine your general direction of travel as Bunyip indicates - I guess you best get a compass. It will, at least, tell your direction of travel when you do get lost.

I never need one in my home area. When I used to make long road trips for travel, I'd get one with a suction cup to stick to the windshield. Used while away, took it off when home.

About 40 years ago in central Australia we came to an intersection that was not marked on any maps we had, had a compass but as the two roads almost ran parallel it was next to useless, we took the one that appeared to be used most (these were dirt roads).
After about 100 miles it just stopped and we realised that we chose a seismic line that were used for surveying, explosives are planted at intervals and detonated and seismic devices record the information, when finished they just move on to somewhere else and leave poor sods li9ke us to find them.
Fortunately we had plenty of fuel but a GPS would have let us know we were off course a lot sooner and saved us a days travel.

I do have a GPS unit ( BMW Motorrad Navigator V - made by Garmin) that I sometimes use. Its good if you need to locate specific streets/roads on your wanderings. Otherwise - with an eight gallon gas tank and a motorcycle that gets 50 mpg - - I'm very seldom lost.

Does your Toyota have an auto dimming mirror? If not go to a junkyard, find a early 2000s Chevy van or other Chevy that has a mirror but not OnStar controls in the mirror and install it in place of yours. All it needs is ignition switched power which you should be able to either fish up the A pillar or pull from something up there.

The coolest looking one I ever saw was Velcroed to the vertical part of the dash and was the size of a pack of lucky strikes. I have never seen another one like it.
