Topping off would be slowly putting in more fuel after the autofill valve in the nozzle shuts off the flow of fuel. On some cars this will let you add another gallon, but it also risks having fuel overflow and go down the side of the car.

Wow, would have never thought of such a issue, thanks for the information

No you can not, it is against the law, there is a fine if you do.

David

 Mate, there is a vast difference between the ability to do something and a fine for doing it.

This is also the first time a 'fine' and 'it's against the law' has been introduced (by you) to the discussion... you're changing the goalposts. :)

And I thought MD was bad. At least we can pump our own gas.

Back from camping... no idea this would be five pages. Thanks for all the advice, except from David, who seems the usual, low-T, knowitall who overcompensates because of tiny private parts.

To answer questions: filled tires, 3pt mower, bucket on front. Been on heavy farm equipment all my life. R1 tread.

Drove it to Deere, which is only 2 miles away. They shrugged their shoulders, said they could tear it all apart, but it would be a waste of time since the problem is so episodic. I might rig a lock/block like that on the 3pt hitch control, that when I'm in B it can't shift out. Normally it takes pressure, but there are times when in motion just a tiny touch of the finger can pop it into N.

I'm just going to keep it in 4wd all the time. Hate the extra wear, but when I want to stop, I want to stop.

My dad sold Allis Chalmers for 25 years. They were great tractors but some of those D series tractors and the later 170/180/190 series would jump out of third gear. Seemed to be caused by grinding the collar shift gears. None of our units did that. Pop always schooled me to not grind the gears when changing. Still good tractors though.

Your tractor may have the same endemic issue. If you can live with it you will save some coin. The only solution I am aware of on those old tractors was to split them and repair the gear, shift fork, etc.. Not cheap or inexpensive.

Obviously, I'm not the OP...but I think I'd be mowing that slope in "A" range...especially starting down the hill...and let the engine do the braking.

Is it really extra wear?
Tractors typically don't have unlocking hubs. The front axle, front driveshaft, universals, turn all the time, even when not in 4WD.

But I guess you can argue it's the torque traveling through these parts when in 4WD that causes more wear.

For the OP - I'd get rid of that tractor before it gets rid of YOU.

Three times is two times too many.

When you're dead, you're dead for a LONG time. Don't risk it.

Running in 4WD (MFWD) shouldn't be any extra wear and tear on the tractor unless you're running on pavement. Pavement limits the slippage of the front tires...

Over filling is bad for the evaporative emissions systems of your car, so you shouldn't do it for that reason. You don't want liquid getting into the lines where there should only be vapor.
