I went to a Nextel Business Data forum last week and one of the guest speakers was a guy from FoMoCo's research and development. One of his current projects that is in testing in I believe Wisconsin or Minn is equipment in the car that is monitoring functions in the vehicle and transmitting the data to a central clearing house and then the aggreagted data is passed back out to other vehicles for so called driving conditions alerts. i.e. you are at 5th and Main and your wipers are on...tell the other drivers that it is raining at 5th and Main.
On the surface it seems benigne enough but think of it. The system knows your location, how fast you driving, your direction of travel....etc. It would be very easy to send any peice of data to the clearing house such as a unique identifier which is tied to the vehicle which in turn is tied to the owner of the vehicle.
I deal with a large fleet of vehicles in ground transportation in which we have implemented Mobile Data Computers and AVL. We can monitor just about anything we want realtively easily in fact the system is set up to alert our "host" when someone other than just the driver is sitting in the vehicle. Now in this situation I have no problem as the driver is in our vehicle doing work for our business in a high demand JIT service so tracking our mobile assets is completely appropriate but I would never stand for it in my personal vehicle especially when someone is sending data related to my person without my consent nor the ability to decide what I send and when I send it.
Just something to think about......The ability to gather information is growing by leaps and bounds but our ability to appropiately deal with all this information is still in the stone age.

You are right. We have the Nextels and in Minnesota we now have the option to dispatch our service techs right from our accounting software. The software also will tell us exactly where our tech is and what road he is on and where he has been. This is done using the GPS feature.

I don't think I would take it as a scare tactic. I really think you would be surprised about what information there is about a person out there. All of your internet activities are being recorded and stored away. ISP have to do this by law. A lot of companies when you buy from them with cash will ask for your phone number such as Menards. The Dominoes Pizza place here has caller ID software and they have your information as far as phone number and address. I donated money to an organization a few years back and if you type in my name in a search engine it brings up my donation. Our government knows a lot more about you then you think they do.
But all in all I think the video was to be just what it was, funny.

Is that possibly a price you have to pay for having all this technology?
We can't have it both ways-- we created the ability to do all of this, but we get upset when our name appears somewhere we don't want it. The only way keep others from getting your unwanted information is to avoid any electronic transactions. Let's go back to the barter system. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I think they were just trying to point out that companies can amass tons of information on private individuals very easily now that just about everything is done electronically. There are good and bad sides to it.
For instance, next time you go to order that implement for your tractor, like a new box blade, for instance, they will already have the make and model of your tractor. Then they can tell you if it is compatible with your model or not. That would be nice... but then they'd try and up-sell you to top-n-tilt and could even tell you if you can afford it or not...
