I went to a rodeo while we’re visiting my son in Colorado. It was in Steamboat Springs. I already knew it but bull riding isn’t for sissies. There was about 6 bull riders and only one made it to 8 seconds. This guy was testing the flavor of the dirt after about a 2 second ride.

In barrel racing I figured out you have to be at least 4 years old to competitive. The 4 year old completed the course on her own, the horse was more walking but she could control it. A 3 year old couldn’t make it happen, one of the rodeo workers had to help lead her horse around the course. Pretty good time and enjoyed the entire production.

After reading the thread title I was pretty sure this wasn’t about the rodeo!
I’ve been to a couple, turns out I’m not so good with sitting on bleachers. We had a great time though, I also enjoyed the barrelmen and the campy humor of the clowns and the PA folks.

Moab Trail, Rodeo... it sounds like the OP is starting to enjoy his retirement. 👍

My backside was hurting a little after wards, it lasted about 2 hours. Bleachers are tough. We rented e-bikes yesterday to add to the pain.

We canceled a couple of trips because of COVID, and skipped planning a couple of others. My son lives in Craig Colorado but spends most of his time working in or near Steamboat Springs is what we’re here.

Where we live in far western Illinois housing is pretty cheap. When we visit a place like Steamboat, which is mainly known as a sky resort, the housing leaves me shaking my head. We are renting a condo for two weeks. It’s about 1200 square feet. I would call it fair condition, it needs a kitchen remodel badly. It sold for $350,000 3 years ago. We got half off the rent because the condo association is doing windows and siding. The first day was bad lots of hammering but since then not bad.

My son lives in Steamboat Springs. He is trying to buy a house there but with Covid and able to work from home, all the out of town people are coming in and buying all the houses that he could have afforded, but they drove the prices way sky high. Beautiful area. We''ve been through Craig when visiting him. Nice area, but ouch on housing/rental prices. Enjoy. Jon

We picked up a real estate magazine, I think the average sale price for a house sale is about $1.2 million and a condo about $750,000. Housing here is actually much cheaper than say Aspen Colorado. We saw a 1/12 share in a place for $90,000 and you got it for 3 weeks a year. Um yeah, I’ll pass.

Hope he got a tetanus shot. The reason they call it soil is because it contains more than just dirt. :ROFLMAO:

Just went through there. 70 got buried in a mudslide 3 weeks ago. See any of the remnants? Heard it was a huge mess.
Saw some rodeo

We flew into to Denver from St. Louis and then from Denver to a town called Hayden. Even if we had driven we wouldn’t have hit the mudslide area. My understanding is 70 is open again, sort of. I think it’s just one lane in each direction. They detoured up through Craig and Steamboat for several weeks while 70 was closed. Sounded like a mess.

It was a mess from what my son told me. Steamboat Springs made it worse for while doing planned road work on Route 40 through there, which then gores through Hayden and Craig. SBS was told to open the road back up. It is bad enough going through there without the bypass traffic. Jon

My daughters barrel race, so we're at rodeos pretty often. I've already set the rule that they're not allowed to date rough-stock riders. Any one that willingly gets on a bull or bucking bronc, must be short on brains, low on cash or both. My girls agree.

Your post reminds me of a documentary I watched a few years back; they were interviewing a forensic anthropologist, who had made a study, among other things, of the bones of Neanderthal Man. His comment went something like this: "The Neanderthal exhibits a substantial amount of bone injuries, which resemble the same types of injuries suffered by rodeo riders." This suggests to me that the Neanderthal took a hands-one approach to killing and capturing his game, and suffered for it.
I'm not suggesting that rodeo riders are like Neanderthals, not at all. I admire their bravery and skill.

Makes you wonder if a Neanderthal got on a bull, how long they'd last.

My first rodeo (as a spectator never been a participant it too rough for me) from memory was the Mesquite Rodeo south of Dallas.

Great experience and enjoyed each of the events but my favorite was "Cowboy Poker". Once they let the bull(s) in the arena the Cowboys were looking over their shoulders too much to pay attention to the cards in their hands. The winner was the last one still seated at the card table.

I love the mutton busting at our county fair!

There's also a couple of new events that the girls can compete in, besides the typical barrel racing. One is breakaway roping, where they chase down a calf and rope the head, then let it just pull away (no wrestling it down and tying it).

The other is goat tying. They have a goat tethered at the far end of the arena. You race in on horseback, jump off and run up and flip the goat and tie it's legs.

They had some team roping, where a younger kid with rope with an adult, one ropes the head and the other catches a leg.

I grew up in a town where they had a big rodeo every summer - Omak Stampede. Omak, WA. I never was a fan of rodeos. I'll just leave it at that.

I've never been to a rodeo. It's kind of low on my bucket list. I would like to go just because it's something I've never done, but then there is the issue of taking a day off from doing what I want to do on my land or not getting anything done for a whole day to watch somebody ride a bull or a horse.
