The studded chains give me a lot more control when plowing but I can still get pushed to the side some. It plowed straight in that heavy snow last night unless i was pushing piles back. Doing that, it would sometimes slide over. I am currrently using an old truck plow welded to an attachment plate.

You also have a tad more weight then I do.

Hi Moss,

I should have added that without the studded chains, it is thrown all over the place.

We have no snow so far this year, but for me, the difference between no chains and chains is like adding gecko feet. The tractor just stays engaged with the ground. No slipping, no sliding. And yes, I have more weight, but that's not an advantage on a side slope.

I had the chains on recently on to amend some soil in the pastures on 30 degree slopes. I can definitely recommend the PT spreader/seeder. It may be simple, but it is very effective.

Thanks again Ken!

All the best,

Peter

Hi Moss,

I'll have to look into some chains. I have turfs, which seem to do fine most of the time in snow, but this time was a slide fest. Also, I have too much air in my right front tire. I tore it off the rim a few weeks ago for the umteenth time and this last time could not get it to reseat, so I had it tubed. The service station put too much air in it, so I'll have to air it down.

I think chains would help me in logging firewood, too. If I get them, I'll probably just put them on the front.

I will never run my PT again without chains. It is AMAZING how much my machine has changed. Now, I don't have a lawn I care about so... But this machine is now officially a little beast. One of my best investments.

Got 5 inches of snow last night and tested out the conversion this morning. After running it for a half hour or so, I've got some good and bad news.

The Good: The snowblower worked really well although the snow was light and not particularly deep. The Robin 28HP FI engine started fine at 18 degrees, and I believe the extra power allowed for a bit faster ground speed than the stock engine would have. I set the skids fairly high attempting to avoid the stones on the driveway. I was careful where I pointed the chute, since rocks could be thrown at a good distance. Overall, I was pleased with how it held up and operated... at least until I got off and inspected the auger :( (which leads me to the bad news).

The Bad: The portion of the auger that feeds snow up the chute was bent from getting stones pinched between it and the "blade" that scrapes along the surface. I think I can fix it, but it means I can not use it on the stone driveway. Someday (way in the future) I'd like to pave the entire length, but for now I'll fix up the auger and use it only on the top portion which is already paved (approx 1500 sq ft). My ATV will continue to be used for plowing the longer, stone portion.

So... Am I still glad I did it? Yep. :) It was fun, only cost me $125 total, and it will get some use on the upper part of the driveway. Since it is paved, I'll be able to lower the skids and get right down to the asphalt. The ATV plow is raised up due to the stones and results in an inch or so of snow left behind. Using the snowblower will not only be easier, but will scrape more snow away allowing it to melt and avoiding the packed ice that usually forms after plowing. By next winter, my son will be old enough to run one of the vehicles saving more time.

Thanks to everyone's help and input!

Finally, here's the video I promised:

Wow, your own blizzard.

Snow removal on gravel is always a pain. I make sure i only scrape to the edge of the drive so i can scrape the gravel back onto the drive.
