Thoughts on mounting a 2500b winch on BX?

Very few times a winch will be preferable to simply hooking up and dragging the item. I can imagine when traction is not ideal you could jam the bucket in the ground and pull (cable grinding over the bucket?) with the winch. Or will you elect to just use a longer chain and move the tractor to better traction? Or use a cable and a snatch block for more pull?

I bought this 2,000lb HF portable winch for $79

it's a piece of junk. Then it fell off the trailer tongue (16 inches to dirt) and broke the case before I was able to return it. Also you don't get the rated pull when the wire is stacked up on the coil, so you have to pay it out all the way to get rated pull, which is time-consuming with a slow winch and will compound your frustrations in actual use.

And then you have to re-wrap the cable in an orderly fashion, while bending over the FEL bucket and trying to push the right button. Try to enact where you will stand while holding the button and aligning the rope, while solo. And then consider it's slow. That thing will have you over a barrel.

Sorry to rain on your parade, you know I like projects. But with the little I know about small electric winches I'm not inspired unless it's totally troublefree and along for the ride (as on my ATV).

Your comparing something different than the OP bought that you mishandled in a position it may not be in. And he only paid $59 plus shipping, not $79.

It's gonna be awhile since I am traveling way too much lately and it won't be high priority when I get back but I will report my findings... good or bad. I'm sure the most of you will get tired of this thread before I get anything accomplished but hope not. My property is such that I don't have many places that I can drag something because the terrain/obstacles won't let me... i.e. no straight shots without rolling down the hill sideways! We will see. Thanks all for the comments... they are keeping me thinking of home projects while half a world away.

Unbelievable... as a reef aquarist this was a dream come true!!! Pictures don't do it justice... just poking around with a GoPro while snorkeling. Got some great video too.

PS: My winch looks just like Sodo's, but when it fell off my truck's plow mount, the case came off completely and it still works well enough to have lifted our 12'x12' raft completely out of our pond and off the ground using an "A" frame for extra height and leverage. It also was the one we used to pull our 2001 F-350, with the plow on and a fully loaded bed backwards uphill out of 2.5' of packed snow last month-using our B-2320 as one pull point and (because of what I read on here about frying tractor batteries with winches) our running Honda Fit's battery for power.

What would you think about mounting a trailer hitch receiver under the front bumper, and under the hitch in the back of the tractor. Build a winch mounting stinger, then you could have a winch in the front, or back of your tractor.
Or maybe install a pintle hitch on the counterweight, and have a hole in the winch mounting plate that would pin to the pintle hitch.

Those chain come-alongs are obviously well over engineered, but for the $375+ I found them listed at, you can buy an electric winch that has a much higher pull rating, granted that's only good if you have power available, but it's too bad they aren't available somewhere for a little better price.

I bought one of the HF winches for my ATV. It worked great about 3 times. The winch and control box were supposed to be watertight according to the specs on the box.

I crossed a creek with the ATV and am sure the winch and control box were splashed and not submerged. Shortly thereafter smoke was boiling from under the battery cover. When I removed the battery cover the wiring to the winch was on fire. I cut the wiring to the winch with my pocket knife and extinguished the fire. The short circuit toasted the battery as well.

I had a bad experience with the $59 HF winch. I bought a cheap winch to go on an expensive ATV and almost lost the ATV and had to purchase another battery. The winch and battery cost $140 then add the cost of the new winch I'm pushing $400 + my time to learn a lesson. Needless to say I now have a higher quality winch on the ATV.

I still use HF for some things but won't be buying any more winches from them.

Your mileage may vary.
