Hiya,

Planning on taking delivery of a 3320 cab in the next week or two. Wondering if the through the hood exhaust is worth it. I do want to keep the black soot off the loader and snow blower but I don't want to have it right in my line of sight when working with the loader. Does the cab hvac suck in the fumes more with the up pipe?

I have a new 3720 cab, and am unaware of any "through the hood" option. How would one open/close said hood with a vertical pipe sticking through it? By the way, I've got 34 hours on mine now. Have worked it pretty hard - heavy mowing and steep inclines - and have never once seen black smoke. Looks like it's been pretty well engineered out of this engine. That said, the 3320 is normally aspirated, mine's the intercooled turbo. Don't know if that makes a difference or not.

I suggest you not make any mods until you determine you have a problem...

I agree with you Roy, but I think you have said before it makes for a more "manly" tractor. :)

True, true....

That said, my Deere 4400 has an under the hood exhaust and I have no plans to change that.
After years of vertical exhausts and gear transmissions, I am so manly, it'll takes years to process all this testosterone...
(plus, I still have a gear transmission).

There are lots of threads here about vertical exhaust on the 3x20 and 4x20 series.
Ok, a post-purchase mod. I understand now. I thought the OP was talking about a factory option. But now my curiosity is tweaked. So for you manly types - before opening the hood on a hot engine, do you remove the hot pipe with bare hands ? Or do you also carry a manly "hot pipe removal device" on the floorboards? Is there an optional optional "short pipe" for working under low hanging foliage?

Vertical exhaust is an absolute must for tractors that do hayin' work. Down swept exhaust can be a serious fire hazard.

Same logic applies to tractors that will routinely be used to bush hog in tall, dry weeds.

Clipping well maintained pastures, pushing snow, ect,.......not so much of an issue.

There is a perforated mesh rim around the muffler. You can grab and remove the muffler when the motor is hot but it is quite warm to bare hands and you can't hold it for long. Light pair of gloves works well. See, JD755's above link. My JD 5300 had a verticle pipe that I could not remove when the engine was running unless I had some major protection.
If work under follage or if you really need the clearance, you could run the tractor with the pipe removed.

Hiya,

To clarify what I'm looking to find out is, in order of impotance. On a 3320 cab tractor:

1) Does the low mount exhaust exit cover the front mount snowblower/rotary brush with soot as it does to the loader mount, loader arm, hood and front wheel? I know I might risk being a little OC about it but I have learned from experence that Diesel soot is not good for paint or zinc plating so I would rather avoid it if I could.

2) More important is the visability to the bucket/forks with the exhaust stack in place? Does it block your view?

3) Again, more important, does the exhaust stack increase or decrease the tendency that the cab HVAC system will pull in fumes?

Edit: Note this unit will not be used for haying or for rough mowing. It's main uses are loader work, (both dirt and moving pallets) tilling and snow blowing in the winter. It may be pressed on to finish mow an acre of lawn around the house from time to time.
