Through the hood exhaust, 3320 cab, good idea?

Roy,
I won't say I haven't hit branches with the stack but usually the same branches hit the ROPS. So I would say the stack is about as interfering as the ROPS with the exception that you can partially drop the ROPS on many compact tractors.
As far as the stack coming off and hitting the window of the cab. I think you would have to be moving quite fast and catch the stack in a special way because it sits down on the lower pipe several inches with a tapered fit. The worst that would happen is that the stack would merely lift up and fall off. My stack has never budged, in fact it takes a little wiggling back and forth to get it off. It's actually a well thought out design and you can place the stack in anyone of four positions simply by lifting it up and setting it back down.
Rob

Actually, didn't even think of the stack coming off...I was thinking (remembering might be a better term) of those branches pushed forward by the 790's stack...then snapping back. Pretty snappy sometimes...
But as you wrote, just go a bit slower along a tree line and there should be no problems.

Roy,
I did get smacked in the mouth from a branch coming off the stack. My mom, may she rest in peace, is probably getting a big chuckle out of that. More that once in my life I did get chased around with her yielding a ruler with my name on it because of my big mouth. Some things never change!

Greg, how much work do you do off the tractor with it running? I do a lot of work where I'm constantly on and off the tractor. Also you have a cab. What year is your tractor, do you have soot on the exhaust side?
It's a model year 2011 3720; 43hp intercooled turbo-diesel with 300X loader and 4-in-1 bucket. About the only time I leave the cab is to connect/disconnect something from the rear hitch. But I can stand right alongside the exhaust pipe and not smell it. Zero soot on either the tractor cowl or the front loader as well.

I suppose it's possible JD did something to improve on the soot/smell you guys are complaining about, cuz I sure don't experience any of that on mine. Or maybe it's just because I make sure to change air filters regularly. The front exhaust allows me to mow closer to tree lines w/o worrying about bending/breaking a vertical exhaust (which I've done more than once on other tractors).

FWJ has a valid point about low slung exhaust and haying, but that may be on the verge of becoming a non-problem as well. My vertical exhaust pipes got much too hot to touch (on 2006 and older tractors), but the bottom exhaust pipe on this new JD doesn't. So I'm wondering if there's not some kind internal heat reduction and spark arresting system on these newer ones as well. Given the price we pay for these things, I'd say it's **** well about time.

And for those of you with all the soot accumulation, when's the last time any of you installed a new air filter? Use a littel WD40 to start with soot-free paint, then put in a new air filter. I bet you see a difference.

This is no country for vertical exhausts ! Too many low branches in the way.

Greg,
My 2320 and 2720 hat soot build up with less than 100 hours. I'll tell you what I'll do. I'll pull off the pipe and see how it smells running without it. The exhaust will come right out from where it meets the hood.
If you're getting no smell standing next to it than I should have very little smell driving the tractor.

From MY2008 onward, the 3x20 series engines must comply with IT4 emission requirements. Before that, there may have been soot from the exhaust. Not so on the new ones. Matter of fact, couple more years and they'll have particulate filters too. So as I apparently didn't make this clear earlier, soot from a new 3320 should be a non-issue.

I feel obligated to follow up an incorrect statement. CUTs don't have to meet IT4 specs until MY2014. So we are driving IT3-compliant machines, which explains the soot (but not the smell). And now that I've had time to break mine in, I too am getting some black soot on the loader leg. Must have had to build up inside the new muffler for a while before passing on thru. My apologies. Still no smell though.
