Through the hood exhaust, 3320 cab, good idea?

I have a 3520, and if I keep it, I will put a vertical exhaust kit on it.. Mine is a 2008 and it soots up the loader just like everyone elses. I can't stand smelling the exhaust every single time i am off the tractor, no matter what side I am on, it is blowing in my face. Poor design in my opinion. I like the vertical much better. Should have bought it 2 years ago, but never did.

I suggest you not make any mods until you determine you have a problem...

So based on very strong opinions here from good and bad experiences with both underhood and vertical exhausts, I recommend the OP go back to what Roy said early in this thread.

For the record, it's not a "mod", it's an accessory.

True, but it does require modifying the hood to install the accessory.:)

Don't think you'd be happy with the outcome of that bet. Instead, I suggest you contact your dealer. Post 2007 models aren't supposed to do that. Even if you're off regular warranty, fixing that should be covered under the much longer emission systems warranty.

Unless you've been tweaking on the engine yourself that is.......

Both my stock 2320 from 2006 and my 2009 2720 left soot on the front side of the tractor and the snow blower. The smell from the 2720 was worse than the 2320.

Greg, how much work do you do off the tractor with it running? I do a lot of work where I'm constantly on and off the tractor. Also you have a cab. What year is your tractor, do you have soot on the exhaust side? Even my friend with a 990 (4005) from 2008 complains about getting sick from the fumes and has soot on the tractor.

Will someone with a 3320 after 2008 take a picture of the soot so Greg can see it. It's not a mis adjusted emission problem.
I do a lot of loader work and the stack doesn't block my view, we're talking about a 2-1/2" pipe, not a billboard.
I suggest the buyer go to a dealer and smell the fumes from a diesel tractor and decide if the type of work s/he is doing will put them in its path.

The only possible problem I see with a vertical exhaust on your cabbed tractor is if the stack hits a branch and lets go at a cab window...but I doubt that's much of a concern.

Gang, I have a 2007 3520 and maybe it is me but I don't notice the exhaust smell that bad with the underhood setup except if the wind is blowing back at me. I use my tractor a fair amount, but maybe I am conditioned to it. Heh. If I fire up the dozer with a vertical (obviously), now that make you stink in about 2 minutes, same for our older 820 (also vertical). I was considering the vertical exhaust for the 3520 at one point but then decided I didn't want to spend the money since it didn't really bother me. As suggested, I would try the standard setup and see what you think. Also, my loader is all sooty just like everyone else, but its a tractor not a driveway queen, so that doesn't really bother me either. That's the beauty of choices though, and what I like may not be what you like (well, except for the Deere part  )

Never bothered my either...

Best reason so far is Farmerwithjunk's post:
Vertical exhaust is an absolute must for tractors that do hayin' work. Down swept exhaust can be a serious fire hazard.

Same logic applies to tractors that will routinely be used to bush hog in tall, dry weeds.

Jeff,
I think making the point about the soot on the tractor is not especially for cosmetic reasons but to show there is a fume problem.

Roy,
I won't say I haven't hit branches with the stack but usually the same branches hit the ROPS. So I would say the stack is about as interfering as the ROPS with the exception that you can partially drop the ROPS on many compact tractors.
As far as the stack coming off and hitting the window of the cab. I think you would have to be moving quite fast and catch the stack in a special way because it sits down on the lower pipe several inches with a tapered fit. The worst that would happen is that the stack would merely lift up and fall off. My stack has never budged, in fact it takes a little wiggling back and forth to get it off. It's actually a well thought out design and you can place the stack in anyone of four positions simply by lifting it up and setting it back down.
