Through the hood exhaust 3320

I thought that I would just throw this out even though it is not about the 3320. I have a JD 330 lawn tractor and the diesel smell was a real punishment. The exhast comes out the front side of the engine cowl. I connected, with a muffler clamp, a flexible metal exhaust pipe. I bent it so that it ends up going down and to the rear. I clamped it to a flange with a nice hole in it which is just above the cutting deck. It is quiter and the smell is gone. Is there any reason why this is a bad idea?

Nope...you haven't added any restriction so you should be good to go.

Hi TDC,
I imagine it's the type of use your tractor gets. For instance, if you do a lot of mowing this might work well but if you do a lot of back hoe work than the smell might be worse.
Just make sure your not blowing hot exhaust on and sensitive parts like wiring.
I don't see any back pressure problems as Deere's solution also adds pipe to the standard exhaust.

Jeez!! That's a tight fit. Doesn't even look like your stack would clear the rafters.
Also looks like a bear to climb on and off your 3120 once it's in there...

Roy, it is a bit of a pain, and the stack just barely clears. I am going to move that compressor so I can get closer to the left where the rafters are higher. Hate having to fold the ROPS every time I am done.

I have both- different tractors of course. I prefer the hood mount on the backhoe, as keeps exhaust away from the operator when digging and loading.

I find the front towards ground method a little quieter and easier for brush hogging around trees etc.........six of one & half dozen of the other:confused2:

IMO it's completely ridiculous for there to be anything other than a vertical exhaust on a diesel tractor. With a horizontal exhaust your constantly breathing the fumes, you have the danger of fire in the hot summer months, and the horizontal exhaust just gets soot everywhere over the lower portion of the tractor. I too love diesels, but hate the exhaust. That was my reasoning for going to the vertical exhaust. As other mentioned, it greatly reduces the amount of fumes your breathing. It doesn't get rid of them 100%, but it reduces them by 80 - 90% I would say. Sure it adds another step to opening the hood, but honestly how many times are we opening the hood on these things. The oil can be checked with the hood closed, and most everything else can be quickly visually inspected without opening it. It's only a quick wiggle and a jiggle and the stack is off, no big deal. Certainly not a reason to not buy the vertical exhaust. It's a great, smart investment for your tractor.
