Disks are also really for pre-ripped up soil
they won't do much (and they won't get deep) on virgin soil
get a scarifier or a plow and tear it up first

Not to steal this thread.... but who do you recommend for a scarifier?

I have the landpride one.

you can also hook up the York rake to it like so

works pretty well, not too hard to hook up, etc

Cowboy... you remember what you paid for the scarifier... and then with the rake?

The rake was about $500 or so? (2 years ago)
the scarifer was about $700 (I looked it up for someone else i think, more than I remembered at the time)
but it's truly awesome
totally paid for itself
did 2 acres the other day, 12 inches deep and away it went.

I think you could use any rake, it just attaches like a 3 point (with no adjustment on the top link obviously)

Cowboy.... Due to my situation of not having any implements but a mower, FEL and backhoe(and soon to be tiller).... I have a specific question... I want to get a Box blade for various other reasons... so.... could I use the scarifiers on the BB to turn up the dirt before tilling? Or would I end up pulling too much dirt with the box, because i just want to agitate the dirt in this case not move it?

I say this cause it would be nice if I could get away without buying a scarifier (or borrowing) just for this application.... because like I said I plan on buying a Woods 5' box blade anyhow... and its $700.

Thanks

It works (not as well, and not as deep but it will save your tiller, although it won't break that compacted layer)
Just set the box blade with the back way up (top link way in) and then kinda float the box blade so you aren't picking up too much dirt.
Problem is it only goes down 4 or so inches.
But, that's still way better for your tiller than trying to do it against virgin soil.

Why not order or go to local tractor supply and pick up a king kutter, sub-soiler, single shank is only $148.00 bucks you can rip that way for a till job.
I use mine that way and get a good 14" rip. you really don't need 5 rippers for tilling a garden.

Cause I am going to do this for 12 acres.... putting in a nice fat lawn

I know this has been talked about many times, but what is the average MPH for using a tiller? .25, .35, .5 or what? I was thinking that it was .25 MPH.
