Buying Advice Tiller options GC2400

Yeah, weird... apparently (?) a discontinued model, at least I didn't see it listed on the Woods' site... specifically designed for the BX1800 or thereabouts. Cutting width is only 39"! It's a tad small, but since my GC only has a 43" track, I think I can live with it. Looks like a bit of tire tread will show on the outside edges.

No, it's not offset. I'd have gone with at least a 4-footer if I were buying new, but this one became available used and the price was right.....

Probably still a darned sight better than doing it with my midget Mantis tiller --or by hand!

Woods Equipment Company - GTC Tillers for Sub-Compact and Compact Tractors

Can you adjust your arms to offset it some? May make life easier.

"Can you adjust your arms to offset it some?"

Yes, Don, thanks for the tip; I did learn about about offsetting using the side adjusting arms from a co-worker Thursday, but I left it pretty much centered.

I tried it for the first time yesterday- "amazing" is all I can say. Smooth, quiet, very effective, and FAST! And, no tire tracks! It's just wide enough for the little GC to not leave any tracks at all.

And, yes, I did see where it's apparently still an available model, after a bit more digging (no pun intended...:ashamed:).

Definitely a whole world of difference compared to my little Mantis pull-tiller!!:D:D

Kuhn has about the best rotary tillers I know of in terms of build quality. They are a little more expensive, but they should outlast most the other brands. I don't know from experience, but I also have been looking at a tiller, and Kuhn seems to be about the best available for smaller tractors. I looked at Massey Ferguson, King Kutter, Land Pride, Sicma/Phoenix, Tarter, Countyline, Groundforce, Bush Hog, ABI, Frontier, Mohawk, Muraroti, Woods, Howard, and Kuhn. There probably are some other brands, but Kuhn appeared to be of the best quality, among the rest. King Kutter appeared bult pretty strong, but Kuhn appears to be built of better quality steel. Kuhn is made in France. Phoenix, has some that cost over $10,000.00, but I looked at some used ones, and they had quite a bit of rust on them, I looked at some used Kuhn's, and they didn't have hardly any rust. Rust isn't always an indication of a cheaper product, but the Kuhn's products are likely made of a better metal.. I don't know, but this is what I have noticed..

I don't mean to nit-pick and I have no idea where Kuhn tillers rank in the world of tillers (but I'm sure they are great)...but since you even say yourself that you "don't know from experience" and to paraphrase "that Kuhns are better b/c of less rust, so they are likely made of better material and should outlast most other brands"...your logic has some serious holes in it.

Maybe it's not a "better" metal/steel, maybe it is a better finish or the amount a tiller was used or how it was maintained that play a bigger factor. I can buy a flashy, fancy new el-cheapo wrench at Wally World and compare it to a beat-up MAC or Snap-On wrench that was left laying in the rain for a few years....doesn't mean the Wally World wrench is a quality tool and the others aren't going to last as long or aren't of the same or better quality.

Just b/c they are made in France doesn't really mean anything to me...Le Car and the Concord come to mind.

Not hatin'...just sayin'.:D

Question for kingkutterrep. I have hit a few rocks now with my XB tiller. One was on my very first pass with it. Each and every time it kills my tractor in a snap. Initially I thought the clutch on the PTO shaft must need adjusted. A few days ago I took a look at it and it would appear that the nuts are backed out to the furthest point that would sustain full thread engagement. Any suggestions?

I looked at some used Kuhn tillers, They had the paint wore off, and hardly, if any rust corrosion, unlike the King Kutter used tillers. No the rust factor isn't necessarily the main determining factor in the quality of a tiller. I assume that has to do with how well it tills. The Kuhn plows for example have better quality metals than the brands King Kutter, or Howse, etc.. That is pretty determinable by looking at them. Plus their brochures point this out too. How well it plows, well that is a different issue. It would take experience working with it to know that, or someone with a honest opinion who has. I know the older plows seem to be made of better quality steel than a lot of this new stuff. I am hearing they plow better too. Again, based on looking them over, and the rust factor. It greives me to look at rust all over something I just paid quite a bit of money for. I don't think painting something every year shoudl have to be done, to keep it looking in good shape, when the ones built back in the 40's, and 50's didn't have the same type of rust it seems. I don't mind a little surface rust, but Howse for example it has bothersome rust on it brand new. I heard a Howse rotary tiller's tines rusted up so bad, and got weak, that it had to be replaced, within a year.

Most farm equipment with rust, isn't usually an issue, but a lot of this new stuff, it is so bad, it is the topic of discussion.. "You see what I am getting at?"

Hello - Thanks for buying a King Kutter tiller! However, I believe your problem is on the tractor side and not on the tiller side of the equation. I hope you get it figured out!
