I think ALL valves in your house should be "exercised" on a regular basis...if you do that you will be in a small minority but will avoid the "crisis" down the road.We have high mineral content in our water. After just a few years, any of the old-style gate shutoff valves are useless. If you can even get the stem to turn, both the disk and the seats have enough mineral build-up to prevent good closure. Sometimes, IF you can get the stem to turn without it or the handle twisting off, you can open and close the valve several times and buff it enough to get just enough of a seal to change out a countertop valve set without having a flood.
