Time to re-deck my trailer

I am thinking of sealing the deck and puting a cheep caulk between the boards so I don't loose all the sand while going down the road.

A cheap tarp works really well. When it is near empty just pull it off the trailer.

I want to put dirt, process, and sand in my trailer and unload it with my loader, I am thinking of sealing the deck and puting a cheep caulk between the boards so I don't loose all the sand while going down the road. I angle the trailer while not in use so the rain can run off. I hope it holds up? I guess if it rots, that's the price you pay, nothing last for ever, I hope it does'nt rot in one or two years. Any thoughts?

Hmmm, here in NYS, the OSB sheets is under 7 bucks a sheet. putting down several sheets on the trailer with shiny side up would work better then caulk. Granted, its not waterproof but it will last the summer and if you use drywall screws to hold it in place, at the end of the summer, just remove the sheet andd throw it out. it will be more time effective and easier the caulking. I am thinking even if you got a tube of caulk for a buck each, one tube will only fill one row , maybe 2. The price is gonna add up fast and higher then getting osb sheets to do what you need to do. Is it really worth the cost to seal those cracks to save a few grains of sand unless you got really big cracks ? in this case, even using osb for the weekend will hold up and you can use it for another project when done where looks isnt important. It's just an idea.

I use the tarp method over the deck when hauling materials, this way you can just fold over the top to prevent falling debris

Good deal.

I'm now leaning to just buying a roll of heavy duty plastic that they sell in rolls from Home Depot and Lowes. It's cheap and will work for one time use. If I do this, it's only once or twice a year, so that will work better for me.
Here's another vote for the tarp method. I do the same thing -- my trailer deck is 6.5 x 16 so I bought a cheap 20 x 16 tarp. I lay it with the 16 foot side matching the length of the trailer and let the other sides lay over the sides of the trailer. Advantages:

--> Like "shownuff" said I fold it over and bungee strap the overlap together to keep the sand/dirt/mulch/whatever from blowing around as I go down the road.
--> Like "Gizmo2" said when the trailer is almost empty I can pull the tarp off (or roll each side up which pushes the leftovers into a nice pile in the middle)
--> There is the added bonus that if you let the edges of the tarp lay over the sides of the trailer during loading/unloading then you protect the tops of the fenders and side rails.

Thanks for all the replies! I didn't expect that! Nor did I expect to hijack the original thread. The Tarp method is very good, however my local quarry has a hard fast rule, "YOU MUST STAY IN YOUR TRUCK AT ALL TIMES" and they do yell it!!! so getting it set up right and then driving in has not worked well for me, anyway, thanks for the help.

Last time I redecked my trailer i used PT wood, and then used a few good healthy coats of asphalt fence paint. that's what i put ont he frame rails and members as well.

This past year i added some 3/4" marine plywood to the top to stiffen it up since I'm pulling my trike on it alot, and that front tire usually ends up running on only a single board, and I didn't like that. that 3/4" plywood stiffened the entire deck up.. i like it.

Had a buddy use trex on his 14ft tilt deck. He got a smok'n deal on some 2X6 left-overs and remnants. Made very nice trailer deck grippy, strong. probably outlast trailer.

It did add some weight, but the heaviest thing he hauls with it is his kubota 2410. It was built to haul the team of race mowers they have:D
