Tipping etiquette...what would you do?

We have had bad service with being in a large party where automatic gratuity was added.

I'm one who usually looks carefully at any bill or check before paying, but last November, 6 of us went to a burger joint that one of our daughters told us was really good. Well, she was right, just an old country place, but excellent food and service. So I gave the lady a credit card and when she brought the ticket, there was the usual place to add a gratuity so I added more than the 20% without paying much attention to what I was doing. That evening I looked at my receipt and noticed an automatic 16% gratuity had been added before. I thought the bill had been a bit high.

What caused you to join this website just to post in this thread?

I hate when people act like "THEY CAN'T" possibly READ AND *SEE* WHAT they bring you as if they are incapable of caring about what they are doing. Do you want your order wrong? Wouldn't YOU like it right the first time around?

This evening, my wife wanted a pizza from the gas station (yes, we have expensive tastes). I don't know if you guys are familiar with Hunt Brother's Pizzas, but I think they're pretty good, and we're just a few miles away from the gas station).

I too think it is very good pizza, and eat it quite often:thumbsup:

The last time I was in Ohio, my wife and I went to the Pizza Hut in Medina in the middle of the afternoon. I ordered the pizza, a beer for me, and iced tea for my wife, and we went and sat down. There were only 2 other customers in the place that time of day, although they did have customers come to the drive in window. The 2, who were there, got their pizza, ate it and left. I drank my beer and went and got another one. A family of 4 adults and 2 kids came in, placed their order, got it and were nearly through before I finished my second beer. So I finally went back to the counter and asked what the hold up was. The guy apologized profusely for laying the paper in the wrong place, and said if we didn't mind waiting for them to get it done, there'd be no charge. So we waited. I went to pay and he refused payment even for the 2 beers and iced tea. Now anyone can make a mistake, but I figured he did all he could do to correct it, so I did leave an unusually large tip on the table for someone.

I am usually not a huge tipper but an average tipper and when I went on a cruise I was expecting to get gouged with tip requirements. After a week of having a waiter giver super on the double service every single time during the week during a packed house, I reassessed my cheapness. I never have seen waiters that professional out in the local digs and I am sure their tips reflect that.

I don't think waitresses like to give customers refills with water. Usually they won't come until they hear a slurping sound or you get up and walk to the water machine and start doing it yourself.

I am not picky and seldom ask for things to be made special, but I do expect things to be descent and eatable. If it is not, generally the tip will suffer.

Anyone that can post the equivalent of three pages of writing with pictures (post #77) must be a thrill to serve in any restaurant. High maintenance would be an understatement.

You are so right! I am so glad to be out of the restaurant business.

Yeah, some of us should never eat out. I am one of those pickey customers, but try to make everything work...that's why I rarely, if ever, send anything back. Breakfast, however, is always near traumatic for me, I like my eggs over easy, and the yolk still "runny". Most of the time they get it right...more or less...but the dilemma comes when they send me eggs with the yolks hard. My "out" is to tell the waiter (waitress) that they must have sent me the wrong order. Life's a *****, and then you die.

Yeah, we've had similar things happen before and they were pretty nice about it so we left a tip anyway. Makes you feel good.
