Tipping etiquette...what would you do?

If I was willing to pay $40 for one sandwich, 2 fries and drinks I doubt I'd sweat the tip. Probably just wouldn't go back but not take it out of the low paid waiter's pay.

At IHOP in Florida one busy holiday morning I ordered waffles with strawberries and whipped cream. After a very long wait and watching in vain for my meal to come from the kitchen I noticed a 3XL waitress come out with 4 or 5 plate dinners in her arms just trying to catch up. Observing further I noticed her boob was in some whipped cream, and even though I was hungry I was hoping it wasn't mine. She handed all the plates off except the one that mattered, mine. Then she found me and gave me mine with a hollow spot in the whipped cream. If is wasn't so funny I would have said something. I don't remember if I tipped or not.

Funny! Thanks for the visual.

1. I noticed a 3XL waitress come out with 4 or 5 plate dinners
2. Observing further I noticed her boob was in some whipped cream.
3. She handed all the plates off except the one that mattered, mine.
4. Then she found me and gave me mine with a hollow spot in the whipped cream.
5. I don't remember if I tipped or not.

Does the size description in #1 describe the location of the whipped cream in #2?
If so, I understand #5

Springs1: Perhaps all of your lengthy, and somewhat bitter, posts would be more appropriate on a discussion forum specifically created for restaurant related discussions.

There were two other meals (my sons and my nephews) as well as their drinks and an appetizer. Sorry if I didn't make that clear.

And I've got to admit that I'm lost on this - how is my wife dumb? About the mayo? She also noticed that it was on the original sandwich (same as me) and when our server brought the replacement sandwich, she noticed that the side was missing and asked the server for the side of mayo. All of this information was in my original post.

If I'm misunderstanding something here, I apologize...or I'm dumb, too. Birds of a feather....

Good luck and take care.

how is my wife dumb?.

That she thinks the servers are not a fault for those 2 errors, that's how. Those errors are server errors 100% since they didn't have to be served like that and if the order was put in wrong, then it's on the original server that took the order 100%.

She's dumb just as I was dumb when I blamed the kitchen staff at Denny's for having not having all bacon on our plates(me and my mom's plates of food) when we ordered all bacon on the grand slams at age 19 or 20(I am 38yrs old now).

Any person that is thinking with COMMON SENSE KNOWS DUH, you can *SEE* what you are bringing out comparing it to the written order BEFORE serving it. I didn't think with common sense back then since I hardly ever ate out to think about things like that.

Fair enough. In my opinion, I think that she is not nearly as dumb as she is sympathetic and kind-hearted. She was not happy with the service, but she, like others on this thread, has worked in the food service industry and she was willing to give the server something for their efforts, however poor they were.

Good luck and take care.

You seem REALLY angry about your food experiences!! You must live a pretty blessed life if all you have to be upset about is the fact that you were brought sausage instead of bacon 20 years ago!! That hardly seems like a transgression worth remembering!! Do you harbor so much anger over other minor inconveniences that have happened in your life? You might want to talk to a professional about this. Just a thought.

I will admit that I do remember a restaurant experience from 23 years ago although I don't harbor any anger over it. Here's the story.... My (now ex-) wife, my best friend and his (now ex-) wife and my sister all went to a Mexican chain restaurant (either Casa LuPita or Chi-Chi's - both out of business now) for dinner one night. We also had my oldest daughter who was about 18 months old at the time. My wife was also pregnant at the time with my younger daughter. Anyway, we ordered our food including a kid's meal for my daughter. The young waitress brought our food - all arranged on a big tray that she was balancing. As she took the first plate off the tray, the tray went out of balance and all of the other plates slid off the side of the tray and went skimming across the top of my daughter's head!! My daughter had a WTF? look on her face for a second and then broke out in a wail! The young waitress froze not knowing what to do. I grabbed my daughter out of the high chair and my wife followed us out to the lobby while we calmed her down. At some point, the ASSISTANT manager came by the table and asked my sister if the baby was OK. She said "I don't know - I think you need to talk to the baby's parents". Anyway, we got my daughter calmed down, determined she was OK and went back to the table. They brought out fresh plates of food and we finished our meal. We were all expecting some sort of comp on the check and were pretty surprised when it came and they'd charged us for everything - including my daughter's kids meal!! We paid the check and left. At that point my pregnant wife and my daughter went home (she was tired) and my buddy, his wife and my sister headed across the road to watch a basketball game at the college we went to. All during the game I just got more and more PO'd. After the game, I went back to the restaurant and asked to talk to the manager. The waitress saw me in the lobby and hightailed it to the kitchen! The manager came out and I asked if he knew who I was. He said "yes, is the baby OK?" I said she's fine but YOU should have inquired about that after the incident. He replied that he'd sent the assistant manager over to the table and she said that all was OK. I told him that I thought that dropping an entire tray of food on a toddler's head demanded HIS attention and not his assistant's attention. I went on to say that I thought it was in pretty bad taste that they even charged for my daughter's meal after dropping the stuff on her. He started to apologize and I told him that I didn't want/need his apology - all I wanted was his name and his boss's name and phone number. He tried again to apologize and I just repeated that I wanted his boss's name and number. He came back out a few minutes later with his business card and boss's name and number AND a certificate for dinner for 4 including drinks and dessert!! It was pretty late when I got home and walked in the front door I could hear my wife on the phone with someone. I could tell she was arguing with someone and I heard her say "NO! YOU DIDN'T TALK TO MY HUSBAND!" I told her that I'd taken care of it and she hung up the phone. I never did call the guy's boss - I figured the butt chewing he got from my wife was punishment enough!! (Lord knows I'd had enough of them to know!) We went back there a few weeks later and ended up with the same waitress!! She didn't remember us though and my wife wouldn't let me say anything. I'd bought a Little-Tykes plastic hard hat for my daughter to wear to dinner, but my wife wouldn't let me take that either. :D

Like I said - I do remember a 20 year old restaurant experience, but I don't think that I harbor the "sausage anger" that you do, Springy.
