just purchased a 7' boxblade.. can someone provide any tips on how to use this effectively, or provide a link that provides some good how-to info?

first project:

restored/cleared 2 acres of field.. removed all stumps, large rocks (even small ones). now left with somewhat uneven soil in places (had been using the FEL to smooth things out)..

can i use the boxblade to smooth things out, and also use it to prep for winter rye seed?

As Bird has said, practice, practice, practice. I don't have a hydraulic top link yet, but have become reasonably good without one. I really do think that it would make the whole process easier though. However, I use the raise and lower method with pretty good success. I run with the top link in and the scarifiers about halfway down and feather the 3ph to remove or deposit soil. Soil type will make a difference on the approach, but it still boils down to practice in your environment and finding what works best for you. Good luck and remember that this is fun /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I have attached a page with photos of some clearing I did. The last picture shows what was accomplished after using the boxblade

I would recommend a drag of some type pulled behind the box blade, by chains.

This works especially well on an open field where the dirt is already loose.

I just did a little work with a 6"x16"x15' I beam chained behind mine and it does wonders for filling in the low spots.

I decided this has to become a permanant implement, so I took it to the shop and rigged it up with a removeable gin pole on the box blade, so I could lift it as I lifted the box blade to get into tighter places. Also you can adjust the drag chains so it runs on an angle to the box blade & will somewhat feed the dirt to one side, like a grader blade.

Could you get a pic or two for us?

I have a related question:

Are there any good books that explain the principles behind the use of these attahcments (box blades, harrows, discs, blades, buckets) ?

Like a box blade. There is more than just hooking it up and running with it. Tilt forward, tilt back, riper teeth height in relation to each of the tilts, dragging at an angle, trying to level a crown, etc....

Theories and practice often dont matchup word for word. However, often knowing the theories let's one develop their skills knowing they are going in the right direction.

I figure there is nothing of this sort since I have neither seen nor heard of it's existence....

My son & I worked all day today on a road through his deer lease. I carried my camera so I could do that while I was using it.

Naturally I forgot, but will try to hook it up in next day or two and take some pictures.

Box blade attachment.
Under the centerpost is a short stub of pipe welded to the top of the box blade, to keep the gin pole from moving around.

I forgot to mention on previous picture, pull chains can be shorten on one side & lengthend on other side to move dirt sideways to some extent.
